Everybody knows though that tax has not changed with petrol prices. Its a static figure plus VAT which obviously becomes variable. Its not like theyve pushed prices up to rape us.

We were already probably the highest Taxed on fuel before all these price rises though.

Just goes to show that the Government could do something to help us all out. They chose not to and blame everybody else.

The problem being if they lower the duty where would they put it? As with all thing the government do you would get a reduction in fuel costs but an increase on something else it's no win.

Yes, income tax. Rather than drop one and remove another, they should have increased them all.

That would pay for fuel, road tax and have left overs to drop all the little taxes we don't see and attempt to reform some of the public services.

One tax, less cost.

The bottom line is that there are too many people. If everyone could afford to drive then the roads would be completely gridlocked so either we price a significant portion of the population out of their cars or we control the population somehow.

Hitler tried the latter, it didn't go down so well.

Just consider yourselves lucky to be amongst those who can still afford to drive.

So why should I pay more income tax just because you want to drive everywhere?

The obvious answer is that they should stop wasting our taxes by throwing it away in all directions which just do anything but good for the country. The best example is the enormously top heavy bureacracy and government "non jobs" as well as the 1100 hundred or so quangos which have increased in numbers in spite of Flash telling us eleven years ago that he would get rid of all quangos. All this is costing us billions which are a complete waste as far as the peo[ple are concerned but do of course provide NL with votes because these useless people dont want to lose their sinecures. Comes to something when we are being taxed so that they can buy votes! Ask them how many "government advisors" they have and how good is the advice they have had so far!

Unfortunately, Les, if we do away with the bureaucrats jobs they will end up on benefits like 20% of Merthyr Tydvil. I take your point RE: wastage though.

Less people is the only true fix, as taboo as it may seem. There are few problems that wouldn't be solved by having less people.

true to a point, but the current extra income generated due to the axtra VAT wasn't expected, so in't accounted for in this year's budget. Therefore they could cancel it out by reducing duty and still get the income they expected.
