BBC weather predictions.
Anyone else noticed how bad the BBC weather forecasts are these days.
We were supposed to have rain today where I live so we cancelled the BBQ. Not only that but they predicted heavy rain. We've had dry patches on the ground all day!
It's not the first time, this has happened many times recently, they even predicted heavy snow round here on Easter day but we didn't even get a snowflake!
I wonder if the same computers used for the weather forecast are the same that predict all the climate change decades into the future?

Woke up to alleged Severe Weather Warning for South Coast Counties. Cancelled an informal lunchtime b-b-q.
Bit of cloud cleared and been sunny for most of the day.
I blame Gordon Brown

I was in England last weekend and according the the Beeb and the Met office, the expectation was dry, 18oC and pretty good weather to be outdoors for the whole weekend. According to Dutch website forecasts for London, it was expected to be miserable.
In the end the Dutch were right about the weekend. It was poo i.e. cold and rainy
Wife and kids packed/dressed according to Dutch prediction
I on the other hand got a bout of man flu for trusting the Beeb and walking around in unsuitable summer gear.
So if you want to know what the weather is really going to be like, look here instead:

Our weather courtesy of the BBC said sunny intervals with the odd shower, so went out and got a new barbecue ready for the family coming round.
Still in it's box (the barbecue that is, not the family )- piddled it down continuously since lunchtime.

I was once tragic enough to track the BBC web page 5 day forecast over 5 days.
The number of times it changed (drastically) as the days went on was scary. I'd love to have a job where I could guess my output, change my mind as often as I liked and know no one expected to me to be right.

I've always found World and Local UK Weather Forecast, Map and Report weather.co.uk to be fairly accurate.

Metcheck.com - UK Weather Forecasts - Live Data - Long Range Weather Forecasts
Stick your postcode in - almost always right and most of the time disagrees with the BBC weather!

In all fairness, the UK is a very difficult area to forecast accurately for because of the changes to the atmospheric systems that can occur very quickly over the Atlantic and the sudden direction changes that they can take as well as the comparatively small land area of this country. I think that all in all they don't do that badly.

It must be hard to do decent weather predictions for the UK because the weather is so changable, and you are generalising a large area (ie the forcast will be for Bristol, not 'Jeffs back yard at his house in a part of Bristol' but the forcasts are still quite bad! They tend to change them quite frequently as well - you look on in the morning, and then by the afternoon the forcast has changed completely!

A forecast is a prediction on events and not an exact science. They're bound to get it wrong now and again, especially with a five day forecast!
