What IS it with this country recently?

After the stupidity of O2 turning off my wife's emergency phone because she hadn't used it often enough, (and, of course, she NEEDED it that week!), this afternoon I went to hell=Frauds for some dipped headlight bulbs for my lad's Corsa.

£23.99 EACH for their own brand H7 80% uprated bulbs

WTF???? Nearly £25 for a BULB? come ON, who are you trying to kid?

I bought a PAIR of Osram 90% uprated for less than £20, delivered free, off the net.

It just goes on and on: my Samsung phone, lost the charger. O2 shop price £38:eek E-bay price: £1.99.

VGA lead for my lad's X-box, Comet price, £38. Currys, £7.99..........

I tell you, it's fekking THEFT!

I agree with you, anywhere like Comet or Curries normally too expensive for accessories like cables or print cartridges, we have a local internet based shop down the road that sells everything at bargain prices!

Bought a 15m Cat 5 network cable not so long ago for about £4, Comet would probably be about £40 (without looking)!! obscene!!

Thats shocking that is,absolutely Awfull..20 quid for one Bulb,who do Halfords thing they are,Bloody Versace..i tell you something else too.i went there to see how much a big bottle of red x was once,some silly price like 11 quid..I got the same size bottle from wilkinsons for 4 quid..4 effing quid,i couldn't believe it..i was so shocked i had to rush home straight away for a sit down and a shot of whiskey..

People knock e-bay but as a price check it is fantastic. Just stay clear of the products where scammers abound, notably phones and cars, and there shouldn't be trouble.

And I had O2 cut off my pay-as-you-go phone which I kept in car in case I broke down. Yep you guessed it....... I broke down but phone had been cut-off. And I lost remaining credit

How about 2 fob batteries from Halfrauds? IIRC I paid £7. Looked on Ebay when replacing the spare fob, £1.99 delivered.

i remember when i needed loads of new hose clips for my samco hoses. went to halfrauds, wanted something like £1.99 for a couple.

went to frodingham motorspares... £0.25 each, for the big uns.

admittedly they do stock a good range of stuff, but some of it is wayyyy overpriced.

another example. alpine speakers for the front doors. £39.99 in halfords (on offer supposedly ) looked on the motor-world website... £22.99 guess where i went

until i stock up from polished bliss, i do admit to buying most my cleaning products from there, very good selection.

Don't mention Versace , I bought my girl friend a top , jeans and a pair of shoes in Versace Singapore last weekend - $5300 dollars ! I could'nt say no to her as she looked great .She did'nt know how much the items were I might add , nothing has price tags on.

I've never figured out how a £400 pair of jeans can be £380 better than the cheap ones With a car you can see the better components, experience the better design and engineering making it handle, go, stop or whatever better. But with clothes, it's just fabric, cut up and sewn back together, and it cannot vary very much. I'd pay £40 for something which looked and felt better than the £20 item, maybe even £60 but that would be the limit. These days you can buy a DVD player for under £20, and that has power supplies, motors, laser generators and receivers, video and audio processing, displays, remote controls etc etc. Surely it must cost more than a bit of cloth

I always use Car Bulbs from Power Bulbs - upgrade xenon car bulbs, headlight bulbs, autobulbs and autolamps from Philips, Osram and Narva. Philips X-Treme Power, Osram NightBreaker, Osram Silverstar and more. for headlamp bulbs if thats any help.

So it works out around £1930.....

You gotta wonder who pays these prices as someone must otherwise they wouldnt sell any. I know sometimes its just convenience to go into a shop and get your hands on it and buy but I cant see how retailers can sell something for 3 times the price that someone else does.

Same with games for console & pc - highstreet like woolworths etc often charge £10-£15 more for them.

Highstreet shops have to pay lease costs, storage costs, wages, electricity, heating, etc etc etc.

Whereas online two blokes can offer a more limited selection from thier garage.

It's easy to see where the extra cost is when your overheads are practically zero.


And sometimes, you need that item there and then - Therefore you will sometimes pay a premuim for that convenience.

Everyone has bought something in shop they know they could get cheaper online.

Of course they do. But do you really think those costs for a tiny memory card add up to a price 3 times as much of the chaps in a garage? I certainly dont.

And yep as I said there is always the convenience factor but I think a lot of the problems with prices are that your average joe is happy to pay full whack 9 times out of 10 without looking elsewhere first.

I Think 3 times the price is quite an extreme. But you are quite right, with regards to things like memory cars etc, this seems to be the norm. In other products there seems to be less of a discrepancy.

Of courtse this doesn't apply in big supermarkets, where prices are often comparable to online prices.

Which makes you wonder - surely a national chain ala Jessops and Halfords (who both sell online btw) can compete with Tesco - Id imagine theyd buy in bigger bulk than the supermarkets.

Funniest thing Ive seen is in Reading Oracle Shopping Centre - a vending machine selling memory cards for cameras, phones etc. Just in case run out of disk space whilst shopping......sounds like a whacky idea off Dragons Dens that got laughed off the stage.

I think people haven't quite got to the stage where they automatically think of Tescos to buy things like cameras, or memeory cards etc - They automatically go to Currys or Jessops. Plus, obviuosly people are under the (false) impression that specialist staff will have the first clue what they are talking about.
