Default New TV, what you you choose ?

I've conceeded defeat and have finally decided that widescreen is here to stay, so it's new TV time. 42" would fit best and it MUST be from John Lewis and cost no more than £1k, I'm thinking of the Viera (although there's four models ?)
Thoughts please

37" to 42" - View all TVs - John Lewis

Widescreen

1. Choose between LCD and plasma.
2. If you want hi-def choose between 720 or 1080p.
3. Re-assess your TV options on avforums.

I may be or may not be a politician, but I'm certainly in the market for a new TV

(JLP are the only ones I'd trust to honour a 5 yr warranty.)

I've got a Viera in my lounge and a Samsung in my bedroom. I'd choose the Panasonic as my main viewing equipment.

I've just bought this one below, but for over £300 less than JL. Try and get a better price from another store (with a physical shop) and JL will price match . . .

Isn't there a whole section on AVforums for the best places that JL will definitely price match?

I bought the Viera 42PZ70 from John Lewis just after xmas and its been spot on, its my first plasma and i don`t think i would go back to an LCD now. Things seem more true to life on a plasma and you seem to have far better colours.

From a different perspective but equally important have you considered what a 42" TV would look like in place?
I measured the outer dimensions of a 37" LCD in a shop a couple of years back then did a cardboard cut-out of equal size and stood it on my base cabinet.
I was most surprised to find how it dominated my lounge. I ended up saving money and buying a 32".
Most will say big-is-best but from a designers point of view most 42" I have seen at friends houses look horrible and appear too close where ever you end up sitting due to skinny modern lounges.

If your room is big enough go for it!

Having 32" was big enough for me.

And having a television the same size just worried the missus.

re: the size, you do tend to get used to them rather quickly, before you know it, you think they are small?!? and that you should have went for the 50 or 55" ones.

its only when you go to some other chaps house that you realise how small a 32" is!

i have not been to the cinema since i set all mine up with 5.1 sound, so technically, its saved me money

Fits sooper danndy into the fireplace alcove we have with a cm either side. Wall mounting kit was expensive for a bit of metal and some bolts

Otherwise is well sexy

5 year guarantee and no hassle if you have a dodgy pixel like a certain Mr Lewis of this parish - currently banned [again]!

Funnily enough just bought a Sony 23 inch LCD this very day from the aforementioned John Lewis.

I didn't buy my Panasonic plasma from John Lewis, but I wish I had! They pricematch, and give you a five year warranty for free, all from a company owned by it's workforce who have with excellent reputation for customer service. The question should be why wouldn't you buy from them!

I have a 50" Pana from the 60 series (TH50PX60) and it is superb, even though it's 2yr old technology and a 768 pixel panel, not FullHD 1080. We moved from a 32" Sony CRT to this and my Dad took our old one. Now when I go to his house I can't get over how tiny the 32 looks, and we occasionally contemplate a 60" or 65" Thankfully we live in an old house with quite large rooms, so the size doesn't seem quite so vulgar. I've made a wooden surround to integrate it with the furnishings and added hidden lighting to make it a feature too. We also got the free 5yr Pana warranty, but thankfully I have no idea how good it is when used, and hope never to.

I've seen your surround on here and it looks fantastic. I also suffer from the should have bought a 50", but coming from a 42" 4.3 rear projection Sony I can live with the 42" widescreen.

Sound and Vision Online - Delivering a better deal

The above link is for a shop in Bolton whom have very good prices, and as they are a real store, JL will match them within a certain distance. As said above, there's a thread on AVF dedicated to JL PM-ing.

I used to buy all my AV equipment from Sound and Vision, and was always impressed with their service, but the last time I wanted to order a plasma tv from them they were useless, they couldn't even give me a guestimate of when the order would arrive, "depends when our van is in your area", will that be this week, next week, in a months time? "don't know". Shame really because they were excellent in the past, and one of their bods was very patient with me when I needed help settting up my amp.

Might be good for price match, but they have a lot of web offers which don't qualify for this.
