Default DOES ANYONE KNOW ABOUT A GAS FLOW BENCH, OR C.F.D.

right, for a college project a friend and i are going to port polish an engine head. our initial thoughts were to put the car on a rolling road before and after doing this to see the effect the port polish had, but after just doing a port polish the effects wont be that great. we have been thinking about a gas flow bench or CFD (computated fluid dynamics) to demonstrate the results. does any body know if we can rent out a gas flow bench, or know the costs of using a garages gas flow bench, or does anybody know anything to do with CFD.

any help would be greatly appreciated

cheers

I used to port and polish my own cylinder heads and it is not too hard to see how to shape the ports visually for best gas flow, smooth out all the sharp corners where you can being careful of course not to grind your way into the water jacket. A mirror finish is not always best as well since on a sharpish corner on the inside of the bend, it can cause the boundary air layer to break away causing turbulence in the gas flow. A constant cross sectional area is usually best.

Its one of those things that can only be learned by experience and testing I am afraid. The only other way is as is done on aircraft wings etc. and use an airflow with a smoke generator so that you can see what is happening.
