So - £50 billion in fuel and road tax pa. Yet only £1billion would be needed to fix all of the holes in our roads. Apparently 65 years to catch up with the work that needs to be done.
....lost for words really when faced with that..

The road networks are a nightmare. The main roads i travel on in Scotland are at gridlock due to necessary roadworks that are being carried out at the moment. Amey Highways stated that the reason for delays was the weather

Perhaps if they spent less on translating benefits claim forms into Mongolian then they'd be able to fix the roads.

All the pot holes round us have re-appeared again over the winter. No great surprise as the council just come round, dump a shovel full of tarmac in the hole, stamp on it a couple of times and move on. Bit of damp and some frost and the patch has disintegrated.

should try some of the roads in the bristol area, they are like driving across that Asteroid in Armageddon!.
i have started a britains crap road group on facebook and am going to put a petition on the downing street website soon.
its a joke considering that the motorist gets shafted at every available opportunity and they cant even provide a decent road surface to drive on.
in europe its like driving on a millpond. even italy's roads are better.

Why are you going to petition downing street?
This is who you need to complain to:

What do you think would happen if locals just started going out and filling the holes themselves at night covert style, would the council come and dig it up for them just to remain? no doubt if they did there would be some additional cost.
We have some which must be 4-6inches deep with vertical drops into them absolute nightmare and my car isn't even lowered, makes my p!ss boil

Our local roads are pretty bad in places. Road repairs seem to have been all but abandoned for a long time now on the premise that by the time they become virtually unusable it will be someone else's problem. Standard governmental style these days.
The trouble is, when they are forced to repair them, it will be extremely expensive to do properly. The roads whch have been resurfaced round here have very soon begun to show the bumps etc. that had developed before the work was done.
There was a time when the authorities were proud of their local roads, as well as the rest of the public services.

I think there is a cunning plan in operation.......If they keep the roads full of holes, you'll have to buy a 4x4 to travel comfortably, then you have to pay the extra tax for it and all the duty on the extra fuel you'll buy - so they are better off and they still haven't fixed the holes - genius!

They were saying also that the compensation they pay out for damage caused by the pot holes is more than if they just fixed them! Bunch of idiots!

The simple fact is that Highway Authorities don't recieve enough money from central government, and what is recieved needs to be spread around far too thinly. The so-called backlog is just to repair those roads which have already been identified as requiring maintenance, never mind those that will need future maintenance in the near future. As funding can't keep pace with the actual cost of the work the back-log is only ever going to increase.

My other halfs road was 'resurfaced' a couple of months back..
i say resurfaced... ok they laid a thin coat of tar stuff down, and threw loads of stones down.... the way they did it left the road in a worse state than it was before!!
The gravel they did manage to lay away from the curbs, was in great big streaks so when you drive over them, you are steered into gravelly ruts...
The majority of the resurfacing, where the main tire tracks are, has already worn away... they may as well have dug the whole thing up and started again.. complete waste of tax payers money
oh, and not avoiding the drains was a nice touch
Slap dash and shoddy..
