Best Way to keep cool ?

Best Way to keep cool ?
I know its very early in the year fior this sort of question but according to some papers, we're in for a scorching summer this year. That got me thinking about how much I can't stand the heat in the bedroom at night. In my house its stifling.
I don't want to spend a shed load of money on proper air-conditioning
Anyone recommend a fan/cooler that really was effective in reducing the overall tmp and didn't sound like a hovercraft taking off
Cheers

Our bedrooms were already fitted with ceiling fan/light units when we moved in and despite them not being the nicest looking things in the world we left them up for the summer to see how effective they were. We get hot in the winter let alone summer and sleep with the window open and a 4 tog duvet on all year. During the summer we've always had a fan on in the bedroom but the normal desktop types were quite noisy.
The ceiling fans are quieter and the one in our bedroom has three speeds so at the lowest speed (which is the one we normally use) it's pretty quiet and keeps us nice and cool.
The only downside is that it's positioned directly over the bed and for the first few nights you worry about it falling down and cutting your head off
Ours came from B&Q but aren't the nicest looking things but we are going to replace them with much more tasteful looking units. I honestly couldn't live without one now

Fans dont really do a lot if the room is already hot.
Best things I've found ( as I hate really hot summers ) is either a proper portable aircon unit - you need to fit a hose outlet somewhere in the room to let the hot air escape, and keep the door of the room closed, but they will keep the room really cool. When we had the really hot summer a couple of years ago, and it was nearly 30 outside, had the room at around 16 which was lovely.
Other things - if the room is getting hot from direct sunlight through the windows, buy some light blocking blinds that have a reflective coating on the back.
The simplest thing is just to keep the curtains drawn all day until the sun is off the windows, then open the windows in the evening when it starts to cool down.
It also depends which way your house faces, in ours the bedroom windows face roughly East, so they only get sun until about 11am, then the sun moves over the house and they are in shade for the rest of the day, so they stay much cooler.

That's a good point, I'm forgetting that I now live in the frozen north and not the tropical conditions of the south east
Having said that when it's hot up here I just leave the fan on all day with the windows open - our room faces north so the sun isn't an issue.
As well as the portable units I've seen some some smallish wall mounted aircon units in the DIYs.

From 30/5/07 ( Met Office: News release ):
" The latest seasonal forecast from the Met Office, updated today, still indicates that this summer is likely to be warmer than average.
Following the trend set throughout 2006 and the first part of 2007, seasonal forecasters say there is a high probability that summer temperature will exceed the 1971-2000 long-term average of 14.1 °C.
Current rainfall indications suggest that over the summer as a whole southern parts of the UK are more likely to experience average or below-average rainfall, while the north is more likely to see average or above-average rainfall ... "
From 31/8/07 ( Met Office: News release ):
" Summer 2007 - a wet season
This summer looks set to have been the wettest since UK rainfall records began in 1914, Met Office figures revealed today.
Provisional rainfall figures (up to 28 August) show that the UK as a whole had 358.5 mm of rain, just beating the previous record of 358.4 mm in 1956. However, since it is such a narrow margin between the figures and further rainfall data has to be gathered, this summer could end up being the second wettest since the UK rainfall series began in 1914.
Keith Groves, Head of Forecasting, said "These figures confirm what most people have already been thinking - this summer has been very wet and very disappointing for most." ... "
So, basically, they don't have a clue! I heard a while back that long range forecasts were just a couple of per cent accurate. Seems about right to me. If you've heard 'scorching summer' I think I'll be going out to buy new wellies tomorrow ..... but then air-conditioning also drys the air so that'll help you ...

Save your money, just move to Yorkshire, it's always wet, windy and cold here. Property is cheap too so you can spend all the extra cash on heating and thermal undies for the summer

Do it what the folk in the Med do: Paint your house white, from top to bottom, and fit white (or reflective) persianas (blinds) over the outside of the windows. Keep windows and persianas shut when its hotter oustide than inside (i.e shut during the day) then open them when its colder outside than inside (i.e during the night).
Easy way to spot a ex-pat house abroad - they have the windows and persianas up during the hottest part of the day therfore letting the heat and sun shine in

Thats for the replies!! especially the helpful and entertaining ones
I'll probably look at the portable units as mentioned! Decapitation angle has put me off the ceiling fans nothing to do with whips..........
The main problem is with the design of my house, its quite open plan from the lounge and dining rooms (which has patio doors) up to the landing and where the main bedroom is situated. This bedroom faces kind of westish so it gets the sun all afternoon and evening.
Still I dont mind a hot summer if that means I can get out alot on my bike
