Thumbs down The RAF is 90 today........BUT........

..........have a guess which important RAF base, existing or closed, was feted by a flypast by the Red Arrows and four Typhoons?

One of the Kent fighter bases? Scampton, where the Dambusters took off from? Any of the HUNDREDS of Lincolnshire bases?

Or even Lincoln itself, which saw the bombers out and returned, when they did return

No? OK then, An important still-open frontline base like Coningsby, Leeming, Leuchars?

Nope..........none of the above.

So you're annoyed they flew over defense headquarters and a city that was involved in the Blitz and the Battle of Britain?

Errm I believe they were passing over something daft like about 15 RAF bases on their route, which yes included a central London fly-by. They were listed on LBC earlier.

I can see your point, but at the same time, spending 10's of thousands of pounds to fly over a base where 500 people might see it.... hardly the sort of thing they would do.

Image of the London Flypast on the 1st April 2008, at 13:00.

The 1 April 2008 marks the 90th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Air Force and the RAF will be celebrating this important birthday with events throughout the year. And, for the first time, the Royal Air Force Red Arrows will fly in formation with 4 Typhoon aircraft along the River Thames to the London Eye– on our birthday, the 1st of April - giving Londoners the chance to see the flypast, whether they work or live in the East, the City or the West End of London.

The flypast is timed so that the formation will fly over the London Eye at 1 o’clock sharp. The RAF want to invite Londoners to come and see the spectacle of the Red Arrows and Typhoon aircraft in this unique formation – to celebrate our birthday and say thank you to all our airmen and women who have served on operations, both in the past and today. The flypast will start just south of London City Airport, before passing The O2, flying right past Canary Wharf, then past Wapping, over Tower Bridge, just south of Tate Modern, before overflying the London Eye at 1 PM. Once the formation has flown over the London Eye it will continue over the Ministry of Defence, Green Park, Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens.

As well as the 1 April formation flypast, the Royal Air Force will celebrate its proud heritage throughout 2008 and a number of key events will be held including a dinner at the Royal Air Force Museum and the presentation of both the Royal Air Force and Royal Air Force Regiment Colours in July at the Royal International Air Tattoo. The Battle of Britain weekend in September will provide us with an ideal opportunity to celebrate the contribution that the personnel of the Royal Air Force have made to the defence and security of the Nation across the 90 years of its existence and show that the ethos remains as strong today as it was in 1918.

The first event, which will launch the 90th anniversary year, takes place on 18th March at the RAF Museum in Hendon where Chinook helicopter ‘Bravo November’ (veteran of the Falklands and Afghanistan) will land in time for the flypast of 4 Tornado aircraft. Watching will be Chief of the Air Staff, Sir Glenn Torpy, accompanied by RAF servicemen and women representing the past, present and future – veterans, current serving personnel and air cadets. Henry Allingham, the oldest surviving veteran of World War One and a founding member of the Royal Air Force, will be there to join in the celebrations.

Those of us wearing green this afternoon voiced our surprise they managed to find so many serviceable aircraft at once

To put your mind at rest Alcazar - they did a flypast at Waddington, and I believe they did fly over Lincoln, they were certainly going that way.

There's always spares to be found when the boss needs to look good , which reminds me I must go and clear a few things out of my locker.

i can see the chopper from here, it was baffling me why it was parked across a few of asdas finest parking bays

i walked over yesterday for some lunch and it was all setup with some kind of display + a massive fat bloke who, while wearing what looked like RAF clothing, would be far to large to fly that chopper IMO

i just thought they were having some kind of fundraiser thing for old war heros or something, so walked away and bought some nice ham
must have been like a little birthday party, assume most other asdas are doing the same?

I think because thats where the crowds would be, and it was flying over what the RAF and MOD consider important POI's
Works well with the unveiling of commemorative stuff etc, and something about London being the captial city or something

Also raised the RAF Ensign on the flagpole. Think they said it was the first time ever it had been raised on a non RAF establishment.

B*llox, I haven't!

I was positive last year when we walked to the div 1 title, wasting lesser teams in our wake.

I'm positive we've done insufficient to stay up this year.

I'm positive England are crap.

I'm positive Oldham won't get promoted yet again.

I'm positive that London gets everything and we, here on Humberside, get a big, fat NOWT from Lying Labour.:mad;

That do you?

Aaaah im glad your only targetting the East End people in ear shot of Bow bells lol.

Im sure London was in some way involved in the war. Somehow anyway.
I do see your point though. I guess at least a little britishness being celebrated was allowed, and not cancelled by the PC Brigade.

Please feel free to take Brown from London

They flew over london because the rest of the UK is a toilet.
I was on Westminster Bridge when big ben struck one, I looked at the clocktower and they were already halfway across the river
You could set your watch by them
