Default Employment do's and don'ts

Can anyone tell me where to start looking for a guide on employment. Such as how to employ, how to make up contracts, what to do if you want to put people on new contracts and how to deal with things like sacking, redundancy and behaviour.

We have 3 staff and all are verbal contract only. Things are very lax and its time for some tightening of the belts. Scoobynet rationing etc.

dont think so to be honest?

regards sacking people, probably a million red tape type rules to abide by, but you just end up getting your pants pulled down by people playing the system.

i have a mate, who has his missus working in HR for some company, and is always "doing things the right way"

ie: it takes him a full year to get rid of somebody who is pulling his pants down

i have always kept things "on a verbal" maybe this is wrong, but i dont tend to have 1/4 of the problems my mate has when it comes to getting rid.

sometimes not getting to **** with the rules pays dividends
he did tell me that the time i tossed a coin and told the little scumbag in front of me that "heads you keep the job, tails you walk" is highly wrong

i was gutted as well when fate decided that he was going to stay

until a few months later and he decided to lock up at dinner time and go to his mates to play games thinking i would not find out

Think it depends what you do. We are office based and the staff tend to be quite millitant.

A mate is a chippy and he can hire and fire people on a daily basis if need be. Our company has just let the staff take the **** for a couple of years and its about to stop. Granted the top should share some blame for allowing it but the top can hardly fire themselves.

Don't know if this is any good to you...

There's employee stuff on Direct.Gov which is from the Department of Trade & Industry..
Employees : Directgov - Employment

and there is this link from that site which may be of use to you as an employer
