quick time, how to kill it?
Really getting p*ssed off with apple & its ***** waving,
i want to d/l some short mp3's but QT insists on being the default application to play the file, and i cant find the actual mp3 anywhere.
i usually uninstall QT but then it f*ks up and has a hissy fit and wont let Itunes work (why???ffs)
its not my machine its the wifes, so she gets anti if i change her set up.
why oh why do software houses insist on ramming there product down your throat in the misguided belief that there sw is the best, and you MUST use it?
All it does to me, is p*ss me off and make me not want to use it.
Ive tried all the menus in QT to disable any/all file playback, but it insists on opening the mp3 in QT. arghhhhhh

I too would like to take a hammer to quicktime, I really hate it.
Personally I have removed it from my startup items. Therefore iTunes would still play ball, but unless you actually start Quicktime it stays pretty much dead.
That however does not help you file association issue. The easiest way to solve this is normally to go to the file, right click on it, and then go to the "Open With" option. Once there you can select which program you want to open the file, and also make the alternative the default option.
However, you say you cannot find the file which makes this harder. Are you sure the file is on your computer at all? As if its downloading the file and is in some sort of quicktime format you are stuffed. You will have to use quicktime in that case.
Or you can go to your favourite app and see if it will let you add an association to mp3 files from there
You can mess with your file associations manually. Open up an explorer window, Tools > Folder Options > File Types. Then find the mp3 reference and make it point to your favourite app.

The only way I've found is to do as you usually do and remove it. restore program access defaults and associated file types then re-install.
QT is linked to i-tunes and as you have found out, iT wont work without QT
