Default The best band that never made it big?

I was listening to one of my old Chameleons albums last night, it's so good, it got me wondering how they never made it big.

I guess that in the 80s you either got signed to a big label, or you disappeared.

So my nomination for the best band that didn't make it big is.......

The Chameleons.

Pixies.

Great music, great live. critically acclaimed everywhere but perhaps a bit to underground to make it 'big' in a commercial sense.

Been around since 1990 althought Unfinshed Sympathy was released in August 1991.

not well known to the general population imho

OK then, in which case if we asked around on SN for example and asked people to name Massive Attack album and single releases how many people do you think could name more than Unfinished Sympathy or even at a push Blue Lines, without googling...

I could argue the Pixies, Chameleons and Apollo 440 are easily as well known.

How about Headswim

One song got reasonable airplay - Tourniquet

Listened to the album a while back and its not bad. Don't know why it didn't get more interest.

Protection, Karmacoma, Teardrop, Angel, Hymn of the Big Wheel, are a few of the tracks that spring to mind. As for albums, well, obviously Blue Lines, but also 100th Window and Mezzanine pop into my head, along with the soundtrack for Danny the Dog.

Ad for my bands that never made it big, well I always thought Oui 3 were rather good, along with Corduroy and James Taylor Quartet (JTQ)

Porcupine Tree - but they still have time to make it big. I'd prefer them to stay underground though
