I guess part of the problem is that Jesus is a fictitious character like Mr Bean or Harold Bishop and therefore to have a yearning to be as "rich" in a materialistic or spritual way as a character from a book is a bit pointless.
So to conclude, I wouldnt blame capitalism or materialism for this poll, I would just put it down to realism

That's a bit harsh. The real, modern-day Jesuses, Mandela and Martin Luther King, came 5th and 9th. No mention of Mahatma Ghandi, perhaps another candidate for such a "label".
I liked this at the end: "Brits either love or hate Branson. In 2002 he was ranked 85 in a BBC poll to find the top 100 British heroes, but a year later came 86th in Channel Four television's 100 Worst Britons."

While I'm not Christian, I wouldn't ever feel the need to have a sit down discussion with any future child over their moral standards if they declared Jesus, Branson or Martin Luther King as a role model. If they named their role model as someone who incited terrorism and instructed the destruction of fast food restaurants and those innocent people inside them, I would think I was then faced with a problem.
I think Branson isn't the worst roll model anyone could have - he came from a very normal upbringing and has made himself extremely successful through hard work. As for why people hate him; some typical modern day British thinking there - jealousy because a good proportion of the population is too bloody idle to work hard for what they want because they think someone else should just give it to them.
