Holiday help..!!!
Ok, here's a challenge for you....
Me and my GF fancy a holiday. We've not much choice in the dates, so it'll be for around a week at the start of July. Thing is we have no idea where we fancy going...!! I have a small caravan (as seen on some other threads..lol!!!) so we could use that and be happy to tow somewhere or we could just fly somewhere. Budget would be £500 each give or take £50.
We're not massive sun/beach lovers so that's not a "must have", we'd like things to do though, so not a "lazy" hol and we like dining out. Can't stand p*ssed up people. I don't mind driving somewhere, though long (4hr+) flights aren't really my cup of tea unless it's an amazing destination. Pool and reasoanbly warm would be nice, say mid 20'C. Ideally no rain..lol! Scenery is nice. We're late 20's/mid 30's. So far we've come up with taking the caravan down to the Dordogne or Southern France.
Can anyone suggest / recommend somewhere that fits our criteria..? Travel agents look at us blankly when we say we don't know where we want to go..!!
Cheers...!!
Nige.
PS: We're going to Rally Catalunya in Spain in Oct, hence the budget and the lack of motoring related requirements..!!!

Self drive to Germany? Great scenery, though don't try the autobahn unrestricted speed limit with a caravan on the back!
We went a few years ago to a place called Traben-Trabach, on the Mosel - really nice scenery, and close to places to visit such as Trier, Luxembourg and Cologne.
When we booked, we did it through Self-drive holidays France Europe Ireland. Driving holidays in Italy and Spain. Motoring holidays in Belgium Germany Austria and Scandinavia. who were really good.

Don't get me wrong, Wales is a beautiful place, but I don't fancy hedging my bets with the weather and as an ex-pat I'm allowed say that
Hmm.... A few people have suggested Germany. Interesting, as I'm in Dover, it's probably easier for me to get to places over the Channel than it is to fight my way around our great British motorway network...lol!! It's just the price for the ferry or tunnel that's hard to swallow. £210-250 with the regulars...

Thanks for the replies gents.
Manage to book a 4* campsite right on the river in the Dordogne for £200, reckon on £300 fuel and tolls there and back, so just need to get a decent deal on the ferry or tunnel now. Anyone know any codes or cheap ways of getting over on the tunnel..? Cheapest i can get at sensible times is about £250...!

I figured 500 miles each way is a total of 1000miles round trip. About 250miles per tank = £45, so about 4 tanks = £180ish give or take £20 = £200. Tolls are about £50 each way I believe, so there's another £100, giving the total of £300-ish.
Each to their own etc, but I'd rather use my Scoob to travel down there, even with the "portaloo" on the back, then be able to enjoy the lovely twisty roads in something rather more interesting (and a rare site down there!) than a diesel Mondeo.
ps: Not trying to start a diesel/petrol/mondeo/subaru war or anything. Like I said, each to their own.

Ah yes i remember the joys of scooby ownership
Twice the fuel consuption at any given speed < mark>
Twice the insurance <mark>
No climate control <mark>
No cruise control <mark>
No space ( cubic metres less than my estate anyway) <mark>
Unwanted attention <mark>
Similar comfort and 50 - 70

Insurance - Circa £500 : Bargain in my book.
Climate control - Umm... got it.
Cruise control - That's what a right foot is for, though cc would be nice if I was feeling lazy.
Space - Plenty more than enough for me and the GF.
Unwanted attention - Spec.D, so incognito.
Comfort - Well.... ok, you got me there (assuming you mean ride?).
50-70 - That's what gears are for. No problems there!
I'll enjoy the brilliant roads down there in my Scoob more than I think I would in a diesel Mondeo, that I'm quite sure of (though I wouldn't mind a go in a 123d). Indeed, I think I might still be a little way off my pipe and slippers just yet..!
And thank you sir, I will indeed have a great time..!!
