TBH I'd wait a while longer before jumping onto a HD camp, HD-DVD might be a dead duck this time next year

On a similar note - sorry to hijack your thread.
I want to get a surround sound system, I dont want to spend thousands, but I also dont need a dvd player with it, just the speakers etc to run from the tv. Can you buy these independantly or do you need the dvd unit to run the speakers through.
I'm looking at spending no more than £300, but want the best I can get for the money.
I know a lot of you will snub £300, but I am way way over budget for my decorating of my new flat!

Freeview don't transmit in HD as there is not enough bandwith for HD signals... however there is a new sysem called FREESAT www.freesat.co.uk that launches in the next few months and you can use your existing SKY dish...
it will be bbc/ITV channels in FULL 1080 HD - BBC is testing now and all you need is a HD sat receiver, available on ebay if you do a search for Pace HD - about £70 upwards....

HD will be the betamax of recording soon, personally i would get a bluray player that has freeview if you can.
I`m about to change my laptop soon to one that has a bluray reader and writer, if you want an example of HD being phased out then just look at the offers that Toshiba were doing recently where if you bought one of their HD players they would give you 5 HD films for free.
Toshiba can`t offload their HD players quick enough.

At the moment there are several DVD recorders with upscaling freeview. You can get the for upwards of £150. It sounds good to me as I have freeview but using a Hi Def 42" plasma the picture is only just acceptable - far worse than my 32" CRT!!!
So, I've thought about going for an freeview upscaling unit - any suggestions?
