help me understand PAYE tax and NI
its the first time i am an employee
am i being taxed right?
i started working during xmas, (5th dec)
i am on (so called 20 hour per week contract... but did more in xmas)
annual basic is £5959.20
my so called tax code is "basic rate"
i just received my 2nd pay slip yesterday , a friend said i have been "emergency taxed"
basically my 2 months pay is
1st pay slip
payments £793.61
paye tax £174.46
NI £43.08
net pay £576.07
2nd pay slip
payments £1172.90
paye tax £258.06
ni £84.80
net pay £830.04
am i being taxed right?

You have an allowance every tax year say £5000 and you are only taxed if you start earning over that. So the good news is that if that is all you have earnt in the tax year (April to April) you will get that tax back. Your employer will not have your history so will deduct tax. You or your employer need to contact your tax office (your employer will have this information) and the tax office will then issue a Tax Coding number which tells your employer how much, if any, tax to deduct. NI is a % of your earnings - about 11% I think. Others here will have the exact details. dl

thx all guys, so what i do is contact IR. to get a tax code for my employers?
and btw i'm gonna apply for a 2nd job, (Cos this doesn't pay my mtge)

Basically yes although your employer may already be in touch. Tax offices are usually very helpful (unless you are a builder ) and have a chat. Talk to person who does your company payroll as well.
Not sure about 2nd job but tax office will advise on this as well.
Note your employer wil have some company tax reference to identify them so get this info before you phone tax office. It may be on your payslip.
