Tax Return deadline, 31st Jan..
Looks like mine's going to be late.... again!
I'll have to take the £100 fine, and hope I don't owe anything!!!
Anyone else still not done their's, or is it only me who isn't organised?!

Nope. I was planning to complete it today but I can't summon up the courage having only just put the last two to bed in the last week or so. Anyway, complete it and bung it at them using recorded delivery and I reckon we've still got until Tuesday to get it done.

Penalties for late Tax Returns
Under Self Assessment, there is a deadline for getting the tax return back to us - normally 31 January after the end of the tax year.
A fixed penalty will be applied if you don't meet this deadline.
Fixed penalties
If your tax return has not been received by 1 February there will be an automatic £100 penalty.
There is a second fixed penalty of another £100 if your tax return is still outstanding six months later -
31 July.
You can appeal against the fixed penalties but you will have to show that you have just cause for missing the deadline.
For more information and a handy chart see 'Key Dates'.
Reduction of fixed penalties
If - when the tax return comes in - the correct amount of tax payable at the due date is less than the fixed penalties, then the penalties will be reduced to the amount of the tax that is due.

Yes, I know from handing it in late last year, and get the fine refunded as I didn't owe any tax!
I always do my return online, but as I'm working in Leeds and all the stuff I need is in Bristol, I won't be able to get mine in on time as there's no way I'll get the time to get down to Bristol before the end of the month..

Got my return done in November online, and paid it just before Xmas - I know it doesnt need to be in until the 31st, but I'd rather get it out of the way and know its done.
Not too bad this year as I overpaid for the last one, so it was reduced a bit.

If you submitted a return online last year, your circumstances have not changed greatly and you can load last year's data, you won't be far off.

I got a cheque a couple of months after paying my Corporation Tax last year. I was only about 2 weeks early with a £4k payment and got sent a tenner or something like that

What is the situation if you send the tax return by the end of Jan, but do not pay the tax that is due until end of Feb.
Is there a fixed penalty and interest or just interest?

Depends if the amount you have paid on account is enough to cover the amount you owe.
I can't see them being able to hand out any fines this year. Does "I was going to file mine on-line on 31st January, but I've heard that it isn't secure for royals or MP's, so I've written to them asking them for clarification on the security issue" sound like a reasonable excuse?
