Games Workshop
Often wander past our local Games Workshop with my young kids and they always stop to look at the dragons and knights in the shop window. Had a quick look inside today and there seemed to be an argument going on whether a 5th class wizard is better than an 3rd class orc or something.
Always assumed these places were populated by spotty geeks who spend all day painting plastic figures. Was pretty much proven right today.
So, question is anyone here play this kind of stuff, or know anything much about it? I assume there are massive conventions somewhere every weekend where all these brace souls get together and battle it out.

Rumour has it that the webmaster has been known to don the leather loincloth of a barbarian and spend his weekends trying to hit people with a plastic sword in a muddy field...

As something to look at I think its pretty smart, the environment and characters used but for using it all to play a game, thats the point I call it geeky

agreed, started with a "heroquest" board game, then i think "space crusade"
and before you know it, one of the lads has this massive warhammer thing setup on wall paper pasting tables in his room and we are all building painted armys for some game, space marines i think i had?
had a tank on display in the shop once as it was painted so well
looking back, i`m glad i discovered girls and motorbikes soon after

So, can anyone sumarise, in one sentence or less, how to play it?
Without a squared board (I.e chess) how do you decide where, when and how far to move?

depends on the game to be honest
been a long time since i even thought about this but......
some of the games made for the more mass markets do have a board, most dont
basically you need somewhere to play, and you can do stuff like
"if you roll a 6 you can fire a weapon" the weapon might have a 2" blast radius and anybody within that will get points deducted or killed
you can make it more or less complicated by adding various things, buildings to hide in, shelter, different weapons

Close, I used Black, then black ink, then gunmetal drybrushed for the highlights
I used Skull white in the eyes with a 000 sable brush
Its a Librarian from Space Hulk game, although these are the lead 35mm models

I used to love AD&D (that's Advanced Dungeons & Dragons for the non-geeks ) and Warhammer 40,000. I also played Space Marine and various other Games Workshop games.
I remember how excited I was when the GW store opened in Middlesbrough. They printed money off coupons in White Dwarf (the GW magazine) and I spent several months worth of pocket money on Opening Day. Ah, halcyon days...

The Head Office has (or used to have) a 6 foot bronze Space Marine outside, reception had two big wooden chairs (like King & Queen chairs) for visitors
Upstairs had a great subsidised canteen, and opposite the canteen was a nice big bar, wooden floors, wooden tables, pool tables arcade machines and BEER
Next to the Bar was a huge Fort area for jousting and other tournaments
If you went in wearing a shirt & tie you got sent home for Jeans & T-Shirt

I used to be into it all loads as a kid.
Got:
5000 point Blood Angel army in Warhammer 40k
3000 point Empire army in Warhammer
About 20,000 point Marine and Imperial Guard army in Epic. (the little dudes!)
Loads of buildings and terrain i built too. Spent hours on that stuff and painting the figures!
Also used to play BloodBowl, and have the big Warhammer roleplay book in mint condition too. The whole lot is boxed up in my loft and hasn't been used for years now!
<pimp mode on>
Anyone wants any of it, PM me (cheap, but not free!)
<pimp mode off>

I have loads of figures in the garage loft, some painted, mostly unpainted, still have my citadel paints and inks too (although not all of them)
I also have a few of the old White Dwarf magazines too, but I eventually moved onto to 1/5 and 1/4 scale vinyl models, Hellraiser, Alien, Terminator, Star Trek, Predator etc etc

Movement
Weapon Skill
Bow/Ballistic Skill
Strength
Toughness etc
and these related to how the character could move shoot fight and operate equipment according to a list produced by Games Workshop in the manuals.
Perhaps a sentence is not enough

Wow, this does bring back memories. I used to play most of their games at one point or another. I did not really get into painting much, too boring for me. I did do a good job on some models, but did not bother painting most.
I too worked there for a while, did some accounts work for a while. They had a quite a good business model, and the staff (most of them) loved what they did. Although most were not paid that much unfortunately.

well, I got as far as the fighting fanasty books (if they count for much) - Warlock of Firetop Mountain, City of Thieves etc - great read/adventure then.
If I could get my head around the rules, had enough time on my hands and managed to get 'geeked up', i'd probably find its quite involving I supose.
