You may want to compare the massively blown up versions above with the original

Anyway, the image itself is, of course, yet another example of pareidolia, our ability to see patterns in random shapes. That does look like a guy hanging out on Mars, enjoying the 0.01 Earth atmospheric pressure, the 98% CO2 air, the subfreezing cold, and of course, just being four inches tall. Martians are pretty short, it seems. And patient, given its pose.

That"pareidolia" is a good word, so much so that it does not exist in the Cambridge dictionary. Wonder where that came from then?

I just clicked the original and it blows up huge, must be a massive resolution. Anyway you can clearly see it on the original even when not zoomed in. I dont think it does look 4" tall either, i think it looks a good 200m away and the 'rover' was in a hightened posistion when taking the photo.

How fast have they managed to get to mars in now? First human to land on Mars in 2000andNever?

If it is a rock it looks very different to any other rock close to it - it doesn't display the same erosion properties at all.
Surely the rover can get closer?

My understanding was these images are a few yrs old, and the rover is dead due to its power cell (or whatever) expiring?
or maybe ive been mis informed...

It's lots of images stiched together to give a panorama.

Well I had a bugger of a job finding it. The full image (resized) is below with the artifact circled in red. If you can't see the circle it's to the left hand side about a quarter of the way up from the bottom. For a point of scale, look at the bulk of the foreground, all taken up by the rover. This thing is minute.

And then here is that section of the image at correct resolution

And this has what to do with the price of fish?
