Best ATM are the Sony *70 range. The 970 has a 250gb HDD and Freeview, so you record to the hard drive as much as you want (400+ hours) and only bother writing to disc if you really want to archive something or are giving it out. Haven't got mine yet but just ordered it for £245, multi-regioned and with 2 free DVD's thrown in. I'm told it's got very easy operation so even the old folks can get grips quickly. Upscales to HD via HDMI or component too, and has a USB port to connect an external HDD for playback of pics and MP3's.
I got mine HERE, but the price has risen since. Do a Google 'shopping' search and order by price. I recommend getting it multi-region so you can get better/cheaper discs from anywhere in the world (ie latest releases are usually under £9 from Korea, US market usually get better sound and features etc).

If your gonna be @r$ey then the DVR-LX70D goes better. The Sony has the same Pio internals with an easier and better GUI, not allowing for personal preference.

Currently own a Panasonic 1-in-4 DMR-EX95V (Video Recorder/DVD player/Recorder/HDD) with built in Freeview. Nice piece of kit, and allows you to copy any of your old video collection to HDD or DVD, or backup your Sky Programs via SCART. Also has HDMI upscaling. Had it a year now and very happy with it.
