No idea, but its not an ostrich, golden eagle or dodo.

I know what they look like

It's definitely a Fieldfare. A member of the Thrush family and a winter visitor to the British Isles.

I'd never seen one before, that's why I took the pic. It stayed in the tree for ages, so I had plenty of time to get a half decent photo.

Not rare, but not common, a winter visitor.

Anyone else noticed the birds singing again in the mornings and evenings?

I see your black caps and raise you a small shedload of birds

Greater spotted woodpeckers
Pheasants
Sparrowhawks
Fire crests
Goldfinches
and the odd 200 strong flocks of Greenfinch

My parents feed the birds during winters as part of the RSPB's surveys, and yes they did make RSPB headlines and the TV!

We've only got a tiny garden, but we have:

Bluetits
Great-**** (but that's enough about me )
Greenfinches
Longtailed **** (passing through)
Wren
Dunnock
Goldfinches
Small flock of sparrows
Blackbirds (used to have a tame-ish pair)
Starlings (about 20! )
Sparrowhawk (B@stard took out a greenfinch right next to me once )
Chaffinches

.....and in the past have had Siskins, a Goldcrest(!)and a Bullfinch. So we don't do too badly........

How close could you get to them? We have a cat, so we could never get that close to any birds in our garden.

We have a cat as well.

Mr B used to wait outside the back door for me, and once when it snowed, Mrs B hopped alongside me to the end of the garden, waiting for her sultanas.

Our blacky pair are reasonably tame, but only with me. If anyone else approaches, they hide or fly.

The female is tamest. Last year she was taking worms and bugs from less than a metre from me when I was building a small patio.
