thinking of buying a sony bravia. anybody in the trade who can tell me how long will a new telly last before it breaks down?? i know how long they should east but anyone with real information???

There is no definitive answer to that question.
There are too many issues to consider. Manufactures can only guess at their longevity by doing various types of stress testing.
One of the most important is the handling issues during the manufacturing process. Many electronic components are sensitive to electrostatic discharge and must be handled in a proper ESD safe environment.
I worked in Panasonic's Viera production facility in Plzen, and "most" of the time the employees will follow the ESD procedures, but not always 100% of the time.
Rule of thumb, if an electronic component is going to fail, it will most likely do so within the first 100 hours of use.
Loads more things to consider but I don't have the time now to write any more.
