How many hands on the steering wheel?
I've been driving for about 23 years now. Never had an accident or any points etc etc...But slowly, ever so slowly, as the years have gone by, I've created a style of one handed driving. I never ever have two hands on the steering wheel. Just the right. The left is always on the gear **** or kind of on top of my leg.
Anyway My brain has decided to give me something to worry about (again) so I've tried over the past two days to drive with two hands. Feeding it through my hands all proper. I can hardly do it. Much slower on corners, reversing is harder. Grip is tighter. I feel like a learnerr all over again. Hell I'm driving like one. I'm amazed and shocked I've allowed my hands to get into such a state of 'disrepair'. Today was better, but cornering...ugh.
So. How about you?

hmmm
i always use 2 hands when "pushing on" but a gentle drive to work, i will tend to use the 1 hand, still cross my hands when both hands are on the wheel mind, i can see the logic with feeding the wheel, but crossing the wheel feels safer to me.

Arrghh, wheel shuffling
Are you driving a Bus, HGV or series 1/2/3 Land Rover? If not, and you've passed your test; don't bother
It's an outdated method of control for vehicles without powersteering or overly large steering wheels.
Yes I cross them, and when cruising my right elbow is rested on the door/window ledge with right hand at 2 o'clock and my left arm is rested on my left leg (or left armrest if the car has one) and my hand is either holding the steering wheel at the 7o'clock position, or scratching my bollocks (if required)
When motoring, its all proper - arms off the ledges and hands at 10o'clock and 2o'clock, crossing if need be.
The only time I wheel-shuffled is if driving my SIIA Landy or when I used to drive the old AWD 7.5tonner.

Both hands for me generally. Right arm on sill, fist in vertical position, left fist horizontal on the wheel. I NEVER feed the wheel though!

I very rarely use more than two hands
Seriously though I think it is safer to use both hands most of the time. I agree with crossing the arms and think it is safer then feeding the wheel.
If you drive with one hand on the gearlever you have to avoid putting any fore and aft pressure on it or you will wear out the selector forks unecessarily.

Poor technique really. If you have to do a sudden left turn you won't have the "pull" that you would have if your left hand was on the wheel. Obv ok for emergency right swerves though but again not if it's a left/right (or vice versa) swerve.
Poss ok on a light motorway where swerves or emergency manouevres are are unlikely.
