Car broken down - any ideas?
OK so my lad has just been given a lift home from a band practice telling me his car has broken down. I'll need to go over tomorrow and try and sort it but it's a bit odd from his description. It's a TD 205 btw.
Started up fine but when he went to turn lights on all that worked was a rather dim headlight on one side. On dash both the dim and full beam lights are on at the same time. He think brake lights and interior lights work.
He stopped it and started again it runs fine. That's all I know.
Any ideas from this rather vague story? I am hoping that I will be able to drive it to my friendly garage mate in daylight tomorrow. dl

Wondered about the battery but it started fine and those 1.9 diesels take a fair old whack to turn over so connections/earths need to be reasonable. Easy to check though. Thanks. d

Ive just had the very same fault on my brothers 205 td.
Its the earth block thats next to each headlight (its very common fault on 205's)
Also very easy to fix.
1. locate the earth block, its covered with a plastic shower cap type thing just to the inside of each headlight. (all the wires are green and yellow)
2. remove this and you should have two yellow plugs.(one on the drivers side) remove these and cut off the plugs
3. crimp lugs on to the earth cable that used to go to the plug.
4. bolt all the lugs back onto the stud that the plugs originaly came from.
5. repeat on other side.
These earths work all electrics in the engine bay and on the dash.
you should even find the headlights are brighter now.
Hope this helps.

Hungrytang - thank you very much indeed. I am going to print off, take suitable tools and hope for the best. Much appreciated

Could be a bad battery connection after it had started-first thing to check anyway-don't forget like I would do to take a small round and flat file to clean the terminals.

Its very unlikley to be a battery terminal as the 205 td has a very big starter motor and would need an good connection to start in the first place.

Hi again. All fixed now
Turned out there are two square connector boxes which the bulbs connect to. I think these then go to the earth boxes mentioned above. In fact they had burnt out on both sides. My garage mate said he had never seen both go at the same time. In fact the fault was picked up by a relay which was buzzing away like mad. Also took out sidelight bulbs as well.
So all well's that ends well. Fingers crossed. Thanks again guys. d

Hi Reffro
I seem to have misplaced the Warranty you gave me - could you let me have a copy - what was that - the lines cracking up.......
It's a great little motor and has earned its keep. But it had its MOT a few weeks back and it cost a few bob then plus a new head gasket because of a water leek didn't help! I probably should have waved goodbye to it then but the devil you know and all that....... d
