The 40GB model actually has a revised chipset and now only uses 135W compared to 200W for the 60GB version. However they have removed some features on the 40 GB to get the cost down, you'll have to google it to see whats gone - something about backward compatibity to PS2 for starters....

Bought one today from Gamestation
40gb with Pro Evo Soccer, plus Die Hard 4 DVD for £305.
He wouldn't move on the price but agreed to give me Sega Rally plus Colin Mcrae Dirt at £20 each

Differences between 60gb and 40gb models....

Along with the additional 20gb HD size
Why anyone would buy the 40gb version is beyond me
Especially for £350 you get 2 games along with all the above advantages for a measly £50 extra.

I'm still going to wait - until they fail to shift them even for xmas.. and the price comes tumbling once again.. ;o)
I really wish I'd have snapped up a few Wii's a month or two back to load onto Ebay now..
