Things to do near Alnwick at New Year
Putting my faith in the Scoobynet crowd - Please could you folks let me know what there is to see / do in Northumberland at New Year.
We're (wife and two friends) staying just north of Alnwick for the week over New Year and are looking for places of interest.
I'll not list any particular things we like, as you may come up with some ideas that haven't occurred to us. (although I definitely want to visit Lindisfarne!)

Drive down to the coast and walk along the beach in front of Bamburgh Castle (scene of many a film and advert).
Have fish and chips in Seahouses.
Go to Holy Island and wait for the tide to come in (scene of the Cold Feet New Year Special) PS Careful you don't get stranded.

Then go to the pub there and ask for garlic bread
Alnwick gardens are good (look for the water feature area), but a bit pricey for a quick visit. The treehouse is quite nice too.

Bamburgh is great but half the village is closed this time of year, Alnwick Garden is good and the Tree House Restaurant is worth a visit as well.
Chillingham Castle maybe open, one of the most haunted places in Britain.
If you're in a Scoob just take that along all the country roads and have a massive grin

Going back a few years since I was up there but there was a cracking road heading north out of Alwinton. It's not always passable as it crosses the army's firing range but when open it links up with A68.
The Kielder forest drive was good fun but a bit hard on the suspension.
There's also the Dirty Bottles if you're after a bit of local folklore.

Park at Newton Links car park and walk over the beach and headland to Low Newton by the sea and have a pint and a crab stottie in the Ship Inn. Great little pub turns into a nice restaraunt at night. Lobster there is superb. Caught the same day before by Gary. Probably too late in the year now though for him to go out to sea
Alnwick Gardens is great and the Tree house is really good
Park at Dunstan links and walk across to Craster visiting Dunstanborough Castle on the way. Jolly Fisherman in Craster is great at lunchtime good snacky food. Chips like your grannie used to make
Barter books in Alnwick is worth a visit.
Cragside is brilliant
If you are travelling home southwards the Barbour factory shop can be good if you like that sort of stuff
But best for me is the coastal walks you won't see a soul

Rhana,
you hero! I forgot all about the Book shop - I'll be spending quite some time and a lot more money in that place.
Thanks for the ideas for the walks (just to add - it's the getting out and walking I like the most)
Looking at the number of recommendations - it appears we will be going to the treehouse at some point

Don't forget to take your old books it is barter books after all - you might not spend any money!
have a look at this site for some ideas Northumberland Walks
Another nice walk is north from Bamburgh over towards Budle Bay
The circular walk around Lindisfarne is pretty stunning as well
We try to get up there at for at least a week every year. Stay at a campsite in Beadnell which is 11 seconds from the beach (4 seconds for my dogs!)
We spend the whole time walking from coastal pub to pub! The Ship in Newton by the sea is really nice though
