Question Which new DVD player?

I posted a year and a half ago that my brand new, very expensive DVD player skipped and froze on copied films. Well, it started doing that on legally purchased films too. Took it back, the repair company have had it a month, and have now decided to give us a credit note. So we have to buy a new one.

I'm sure someone here has looked at this recently. What's good on the market?

It's to be paired with our trusty () Samsung LE40M61 gogglebox.

HD a possibility
Internal HDD preferable, even though we tried using the previous one a couple of times and gave up after recording the wrong channel (no teenagers in this house to show us how to do it )
HDMI I suppose, though my component video cable cost me a bloody fortune

Many thanks

Why not get Sky+ for your recordings and a combined HD/Bluray player

Not in the UK so not sure if I could get Sky+. Can't say I'm interested either TBH

If I'm right, Samsung and Sony (I have Samsung TV, Sony camcorder) have both signed up to Bluray - so doesn't that mean that any machine I buy from them, that advertises HD, will play Bluray?

Just phoned the company. They don't deal in Sony, and don't have any Bluray stuff. Seems the best they can offer is the latest top of the range Samsung, which in your language would be model sh857 - I can't find it in google in English, only French. The 855 has a 250GB disc, this one has 320GB (complete overkill for us) and also a USB 2.0 port which would be good.

I guess it'll do. Provided it plays our legit copy of Die Hard 2 though. The other one didn't, that's why it went back

(Anyone know the region cracks for Samsung DVD players?)

The USB ports tend to be read only and only see MP3 and JPEG files, so you can only view pics and listen to your music collection. You can't usually view stored video files, or export any media recorded on the HDD to any external USB storage device.

The new '70' range of Sony HDD/DVD-R units are a big improvement over the old '60' series, as they were quite unreliable. In the '70' series they have ditched their own internal electronics in favour of Pioneer units which have always been much better. Some of the better Sony features haven't been able to migrate to the Pio hardware, but the trade-off of reliability is well worth it.

Cheers CB. But this seems to be a credit note for a like for like replacement, and if they don't do Sony, I'm pretty much limited to that samsung.
