USB Turntable
NETTO are doing these things for £49:99 as from Thursday - normally £99:99!
I would love one but my nearest NETTO is 30 miles away!

The sound quality must be dire, and it could damage your vinyl.
Personally I can't understand why anyone would want to digitise their vinyl as it will always sound far better on a good T/T than CD ever can.

I bought a numark one and I am well pleased with it. Its not about the quality or the 'warmth' for me. Its the practicality. Once all my vinyl is done I can sell it and now it gets played rather than sitting in the loft in flight cases.

I've got some rare old school house mixes on 12" vinyl that I've spent years looking for on CD or MP3 without success so can see the benefits of having one of these. In fact I was looking at the Maplin one only the other day. I haven't had a record deck for about 10 years so haven't heard the tunes for a long, long time.

It all depends how serious you are about your music.
Like some of the above I would never risk any of my vinyl on a turntable like that as there is a good chance it would never sound the same on a 'proper' high end turntable. After all that whole turntable costs far less than even a cheap hifi cartridge.
I would like to have some of vinyl on my MP3 player though so I am considering one of these or similar
Instant Music
Has anyone else tried one?

Alternatively you can get an analogue to digital converter, i brought one for my dad, record player to amp, amp out connected to a powered USB converter, usb goes into laptop,
Software that comes with it cancels out the noise (or increases it) same with the rumble, and it automatically rips it to Mp3's and seperates the tracks using the gaps in the record. thinkgeek.com
I actually have the usb missile launcher and its not bad along with the usb fish tank. (both presents)
im going to step back into my geeky closet now

Where do you connect the Turntable into? a couple of phono plugs? Do you remember what the device was called?

Indeed, the signal voltages coming out of a Turntable and Tape Cassette are extremely low ...... maybe thats ok for the USB and it isn't an issue?

thats correct as the usb device wont be grounded either, the way the one i got works is that it goes through the amp (as normal) and out the tape out or as some amps have md out or rec out or whatever out you have.
tape out uses two phonos to usb device and that connects to pc through usb.
ThinkGeek :: InstantMusic Vinyl & Cassette Ripper
Cost me about £30 and i imagine the pcworld one is similar.
there are other ways of doing this but for simplicity and quality this is one of the best.

mine is a creative sound blaster. the tape player will connect with just phono leads a turntable may require an amp inbetween but still connects with phono leads.

I just saw this device in PC Turd too
Not a place I normally frequent but had to nip to B & Q and PC Turd is next door, and wanted to laugh at how much DD 5.1 sound cards are

Expensive way to do it.
I was thinking if I got one of these, I could transfer the old vinyl, then sell both the vinyl and the USB turntable, on EBAY or whatever.
I only have a sentimental connection to the stuff because I can't play it at the moment. Once I have it on MP3 and backed up, I would be happy to part with all of the old stuff.

You could probably sell that USB Turntable for around £35 secondhand - it's just cost you £15 ......................... excellent suggestion!
