How much is my old stereo equipment worth ?
#1
As the title suggests has anyone an idea how much I could sensibly get for this lot as I want the space back in my lounge and don't use it much.
All Kenwood stuff
Quartz Synthesizer Tuner - KT-2020L
Double Cassette Deck with Dolby B&C and something called HX Pro - KX-8080
Graphic Equalizer - GE-5010
CD Player - DP-X9010
Digital Integrated Amplifier - DA-9010
2 x Wharfedale speakers on Black Satin stands
I have two remotes for the system ( 1 for Amp and 1 for the whole lot I think ) and when I last used it the sound could be turned up VERY LOUD
The only damage is to the amplifier remote which has a couple of small teeth marks on it where my puppy decided to break his teeth in, and to one of the speaker stands for the same reason.
As you can guess by the descriptions above I don't know much about HiFi and haven't used the system much since I bought a sound surround TV - used to run the SKY Digital box through the system for better sound.
Any help would be appreciated, any decent offers will be genuinely considered
I'm based near Lakeside in South Essex if that helps
Thanks in advance

Depends on how modern the stuff is but I'd generally say anything from 30-50% of original purchase price. Check www.ebay.co.uk to see what similar kit goes for. Also bear in mind that pretty decent full systems from some very reputable makes can be had for a couple of hundred quid new from the likes of Dixons.
Hope this helps

Sorry to divert this to my own question but just in case any hi-fi experts are here...
I have an old TEAC valve amplifier (in working order) that was donated by an uncle that is just sitting in the loft. The thing is huge and weighs a ton and I have heard that there are people who prefer the sound of a valve amp. Is it likely to be a collectors item (it must be 20 years old I think) or just junk?

Marin. Well it depends if it still works! A lot of valve stuff if not used for a longtime will break down after a few hours use. The value is down to what folk will pay. Does it have original valves etc. If not do they match etc????? What is the general condition like. They can be worth very little 25-40££ as to get them fixed could cost a bit. Yes Valve stuff does have a following, but it tends to be "QUAD" "LEAK" etc moving up to "AUDIONOTE" and "CONRAD JONHSON" with prices to match!!!!
Be carefull if you do use it. Dont switch it on and off a lot as they dont like it. Kept mine on for over 3.years!!!
If you can give me further details I might be able to offer a better idea.

Have you thought of trying a Naim dealer. I have all Naim kit and when I upgraded to NAP250 amp my local dealer sourced a decent used one for me.
email me if you want some details
cheers

Luke, thanks for the reply. I'll get myself up in the loft and unpack the box and note the model number etc. I think there are spare valves in there too but the age may be a problem. Keep an eye the board for a reply.

Luke,
I've had a look and it is in fact a Leak and dates from at least 1969 as there is a sales invoice in the box, for a valve dated 10/05/69. There is actually a Leak 'Point One' Pre-amplifier and a Leak 'Stereo 20' in the box and 8 or so spare valves. I have not attempted to switch it on as I do not want to risk damaging it.
Is this a collectors item, antique or junk? Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Marin,
don't chuck that old valve stuff out, it could be worth £500+ !
I'm no expert but people will pay good money for old valve gear like this. It will probably need overhauling before it will be useable but it's still valuable.
Best bet (if you want to sell it) is to get a copy of hi-fi world magazine and ring round a few of the specialist dealers.
Wish I could afford to buy it off you myself but I'm skint
Hope this helps.

Well as you can see I know about "Leak 20's"!I have had 7-8 of the things. The preamp is worth very little. The power amp even if mint and with full set "Mullard"valves working and unmodified can still only be worth £230.00 tops. The best shop in Uk is "Classique Sounds" . Look in "Hi-Fi world" they will tell you more. Chances are it wont work for long. Once it has been worked and changed by some Muppet the value drops very quickly.
I have paid £50.00 for them not working. They are not that rare. £500.00 is way over the top stuff. The prices of these things have taken a massive drop in the last few years.
Dont try to use it. It is a very delicate to its input level. Remember this was designed to have less than 1 volt input. most new cd players and preamps give 2-3 volts.
