What powers cranes ?
#1
Looking out of my office window there's a building site with a few big cranes.
What do they use for power ? If it's electric
there's no sign of any cables. If it's not then how do they get the fuel up there ?

I believe that most are elctric, either on site supply or via a generator. Some of the larger ones have a smaller service crane on top which could lift fuel up.
http://www.howstuffworks.com/tower-crane.htm has some info and pictures.
Whats always fascinated me is how they use the crane to put another section in the tower.
If watching the cranes is really affecting your productivity I can get a definitive answer from some contacts.

You can power them how you like.
The main motive power can be electric, diesel engine etc.
They then drive a number of hydraulic pumps for motion, traverse etc.
If diesel pump fuel up into a 24 hour storage tanf.
if electric run a cable up, then a the top via a slip ring into the cab of the crane.

Thanks guys. They're right outside my window so it does affect my productivity a bit watching them get built. The base goes up in sections then the top goes on - all done with a mobile crane.
I just can't see any pipes ir cables, so I wondered how the power got there.
