Why anyone bought a share that was plainly in freefall is beyond me. The smart thing to do was to go short on a spread bet and absolutely coin it. It was no lose bet.

I shouldn't give two hoots about Northern Rock but I've found the whole thing pretty interesting.
Still want to know how this one is going to finish and the repercussions

If they were free shares from the building soc to bank conversion, then a profit will be made regardless of the price.

I made a few hundred quid in 24 hrs and it had absolutely nothing to do with financial savvy, I just got lucky with the government 'backing' announcement and the time I chose to sell. I might buy 200 @ 150-160 with the winnings and see what happens.

They have been a fair few humps and troughs...I gave up following them after having issues with my share dealing account.
IF I could have bought when I wanted to, and then sold when I wanted to I would have made 60p a share. That was during a day when the shares closed much much lower than when they opened.
Unfortunately for me, my trade was not made due to TD Waterhouse being swamped, that cost me my gains of £2k, and them my account

i bought too early at £1.82 545 shares on fooking friday ,
should have waited until the weekend,
but i'm keeping them until near xmas to see what happens, i truely don't think its showing its worth,
i'll be grateful if it hits £3,

And you could also lose most of it. It's pure gambling, unless you happen to have inside information.

I'm afraid this is incorrect as well.
Sticking a few pounds on a roulette wheel is "pure gambling". Buying shares in a firm whose current price could be reasonably assessed as undervalued, with a view to seeing that price increase over the coming months or years, is a risky, but considered investment.
The notion of this being 'pure gambling' is even less appropriate if the investor has other monies spread across low and medium risk investments.

But Northern Rock shares are based so much on sentiment that it is more or less a gamble on what people and the city "feel".
Does the board at TSB decide to put in an offer? Are individuals switched off the brand? Will the city carry on lending to them?
I suspect backing the odds-on favourite in the Ascot Stakes is less of a gamble.
But its your dosh

I have some, lost some money but I dont mind as its all part of the fun as I would never buy as a serious financial investment! Its not pocket change but its not the end of the world either. If they happen to go back up then I still could make something.

Sticking your life savings on NRK would be a gamble. Investing a small amount to add to your basket would, in my opinion, be taking a considered risk. The risk is even more viable if one's re-investing a sharply realised return, as the initial capital is secure.
Anyway, I'm off to the bookies.
