American Style Fridges
I've been thinking of getting an american style fridge for a while, the wife likes the idea of a chilled water and ice dispenser.
Problem is we don't have the biggest kitchen in the world, anyway we've agreed we have enough space to get one so we went to Comet and Currys yesterday.
My main question was related to the cold water feed to the dispenser, from what I could gather yesterday the hose is quite small (smaller in diameter than a tv aerial wire) and therefore should be fairly easy to conceal, our fridge will be on the other side of the kitchen to the sink (and therefore the cold water tap) - will this be a problem? Distance wise is no more than 10-11 feet.
Assuming it isn't a problem, what will be the best way to run / conceal it, these are the options I've came up with:
Run it along the top of the skirting board, up and down the door frame and along the skirting board to the rear of the fridge, should be easily tacked and hidden.
Remove the wooden flooring that we both hate, make a little trench in the concrete floor across the kitchen and put some trunking in and run the hose through there, tile the kitchen floor and hose should be reachable via the trunking if it needed replacing.
Other option is to tile the kitchen floor, would the hose fit in between the tiles and then covered with grout??
Finally, does anyone know if the doors come off??
The depth of the one we want is 675mm which means we have no problem taking it through the garage and through the door into the kitchen, however there's a piece of kitchen worktop which slightly reduces the width and it would be very difficuly to actually get it into the kitchen, but if the doors come off it should be fit through easy.

doors usually come off, as they are fitted in the first place
the parents have one, the ice machine gives cubes or crushed ice and its actually really handy (the crushed ice is my favorite)

We have a Bosch one and the doors come of that easily.
Regarding the piping, you can get a skirting which the front pops off and you can hide cables etc. but not sure if you could hide a pipe in it. We were lucky that the downstairs loo is back to back with where the fridge is in the Kitchen, so it was just a case of drilling a hole through the wall and putting a splitter on the cold water supply to the sink, works a treat.
BTW these fridges are brilliant, only advice i'd say is make sure if it has a filter fitted you can get replacements easily, My parents have a hell of a job getting ones for their Smeg fridge.

I'll second checking out water filters before you buy - my Samsung fridge is in an alcove and the filter is at the rear. No way I can pull the fridge out every time I need to change the filter. Also they're £60 a pop!!
Nice to have a selection of ice available when you want it though , although the ice maker does take up about a quarter of the space in the freezer section...

The doors on my Samsung were fitted in situ - it was delivered direct from Samsung and fitted by a couple of blokes employed by them.
I considered some of the more expensive American brands, but have been very pleased with the Samsung.
Buy online to save loads.

The house we stay in in the USA has a full on almost walk in version of these fridges. So when we came back to the UK, we had to buy one lol.
Went for one without the dispenser to get better freezer capacity. Tends to suffer on UK models.
But DO love the crushed ice also, great for a cold drink by the pool (in the US)
