You can pay in any amount
However
You will be asked for ID
and
It will be reported to the Money Laundring Team who fluctuate the reporting limit. If this is a one off say from the sale of a car you will hear nothing however if they see a trend in large cash deposits expect to answer a polite question or two

I tried to pay in about £400 into Northern Rock a while ago. Stupid cashier told me that I could not do this as it was too large a sum I enquired further saying I wanted to PAY INTO may account, not make an unannounced withdrawl.
She said that banks do not accept large payments of cash anymore I said "fine, if you want to be an **** about this, I can take my money elsewhere". I did just that, without issue I might add.
I got home, and about 30 mins later the police are at my door. I am like WTF, and this copper is explaining to me that they have been informed of me attempting to make large suspicious deposits of cash . I point at the £400, he takes one look and asks where it came from. I say I am not prepared to say unless he has some official grounds to ask. As it was such a small amount of money he is reasonably happy with this and leaves. It came from the proceeds of selling loads of crap at a car boot sale, but its my right to privacy.
Needless to say I have no worries about this Northern Rock crisis, as my account was closed the day after this stupid cashier went loco and called the cops out on me

I have no clue at all Was a really silly doo gooder jobs worth mare behind the desk I think she was just being ****ty as heaven forbid she may have had to count some notes and coins. I had even separated all the coins into separate bags for weighing....
I still remember standing there in front of her, speechless, for like 30 seconds. Eventually managing to say "But...like...erm.....this IS a bank right?"

OMG, I wish it was 400k. Dunno how the hell you are meant to carry 400k (mostly in coins) in a carrier bag.
God knows what she told the copper, when he saw the "massive pile" of cash he did not exactly look interested

I remember coming back from France on a booze cruise and when we all got pulled by customs they asked "any large quantities of cash on board"
One of us piped up (the rest of us didn't know a thing) "Oh I've got 6 thousand"
FFS I thought we were doomed there and then...
Naa mate he said, I mean like 20k and laughed, then waved us on.
