ANPR checks - front or rear plate ??
Do cameras set up for ANPR normally take the reading from your front or rear plate ??
rear plate is slightly altered which am not sure if it will be picked up on one off these ANPR checks just wonder if it would be safer to run with a completely legal plate on the front in case off such checks ??

Either.
ANPR is usually in place for more interesting things than numberplates. Not saying they will not do you, but usually set up for unregistered, un taxed, un mot'ed cars. Or cars registered to people known to be involved in certain types of crimes.
If you match one of the others AND have a badly spaced or written plate, you will get done obviously.

They usually have a van or T5 sat in a lay by with the camera and further down the road (where you cant see and cannot avoid) pull you in for a grilling.
Happened in our work van, pulled us over cos the tax disc had dropped down the dash. They were nice to us though, didn't start poking around asking us a load of unnecessary questions.
