10k trail race today - need new legs!
Did the Lanhydrock (Cornwall) 10k trail run today- almost total exhaustion at one point and felt dizzy, nearly walked, etc (some pretty major hills) but...
Came 5th (out of about 700) at 44m07s - and the top eight (me included) were sent the wrong way by daft marshalls at about 5km and lost about a minute - so pretty stoked. Legs still crippled!
Thanks to those who put up sponsorship - All goes to Cancer Research!
Just for info, started running about three months ago and did my first (ever) 10k race in pretty severe conditions (very hilly, muddy, multiple stream crossings etc) in 52m27s so a decent improvment.

Well done chap! I've just cracked sub 50 over that distance, 44 minutes is really going some.
Now you need to work on some endurance - On Saturday we did a 14km trail run, a short canoe and 42km mountain bike (including 2x 250m ascents up Bredon hill) in a total of 5 hours and 5 minutes. We came 12th in class with 505 points and I still can't walk properly!
The HRM reckons I burned off 5500 calories!

I'm camera shy
In reality, we managed to evade the photographer all day long! He usually lurks around a couple of checkpoints for a while and then moves on so we just kept on missing him.

Wife's uncle took this shot right at the end - Had to put a real sprint on to beat the guy behind me (we were neck and neck for the last 2km) but managed to beat him - I'm in the black vest and shorts:

Nice one Chop
I had a discussion with the better half when I got home - would I feel worse after all that exercise or would I feel worse if I had spent the day in the pub knocking back 8 pints or so.
As I couldn't give her a definitive answer, I suggested that I spend next weekend in the pub quaffing ale, purely so that I can find the answer to this most perplexing problem!

SJ - Lanhydrock nr Bodmin. All said it was a lot more hilly than expected.
One hill was 2km long - upwards! Seriously painful.
No obstacles though - bit of road but mostly track and it was nice and dry.
Think the winning time was a nadge under 42 mins but the lead eight (me included) did get misdirected at 5km (and ran an extra 200m or so the wrong way!!) so it would have been less.

That's not a hill! I guess it was around the grounds of the house. Looks like a great setting for a race. Shame about the 200 extra metres though, bloody marshals!
If you're interested, here's our course map. The objective is to hit as many or as few checkpoints as you want within your time limit of 5 or 6 hours. Red for MTB, Blue for trail run and green for canoe. Start/Finish is the triangle in the Royal Horticultural Centre in the North West corner. The contours scanned a little faint but you will get the general idea

SJ - Nice looking terrain. Sounds complicated but fun!
Was it a real "push yourself to your limits" affair?
I felt seriously dodgy from about 6 to 9km!

To be honest mate, I felt ok. I carb loaded on Friday night with 250g pasta and a pack of bacon, I then had 5 weetabix for breakfast and topped up some fruit and cruch bars about an hour before the race. I had a couple of cruch bars as we were racing as well so on the fuel front I didn't run out.
My team mate had a rougher time with some leg cramps in the last half hour but then compared to the previous race where I ran out of fuel in last half hour and had to be dragged over the line.
We pushed fairly hard and ran further than we planned to (we aim for a 10km run). The bike stage suffered a little as we didn't have quite enough time but the routes we chose were good for speed - we hill all bar 3 MTB checkpoints (20,27,29). All in all, we scored over 500 points which was our objective for the race so job well done I think
