Mercury Music Prize 2007: who should win?
We will know in a couple of hours or so.
Bat For Lashes for me
Natasha Khan is very cool
and BFL are completely original.

or The Klaxons - a brilliant live act with an album full of classics.
The rest of the entries are rubbish IMO.

What I want to know is why is there such a media frenzy over that dozy bitch Amy Whinehouse, she can't sing very well anyway..
Like most "musicians" (in the loosest possible term) haven't been doped up to the eyeballs on some drug or other since the 50's...
What's so special about this druggie??

Well Amy WineVat was actually very good. As I've said before she does have a voice on her and it was good to hear it 'unplugged' like that. On the strength of that I think she'll take it.
She looks dog rough though....

I can tell you if you want me to.
Firstly - did you see their Glastonbury performance? It was just astonishing. I was converted there and then
(I've got it recorded if you want to see it.)
The delivery and the crowd reaction was electrifying.... and the songs. The songs are all dance along, sing along, hands in the air classics in a kind of old skool rave/punk hybrid that is totally new/but timeless at the same time.
I think it's been classified as 'new rave' since
About right though.

Can't sing

She is fantastic and very talented. Far superior to that useless article Doherty.
Manda told me to listen to that when i said RH were errrr bad to my ears at V last year. It's since grown on me i have to say.
Yea she can really sing !!!
YouTube - Church & Winehouse - Beat It
Admitedly she's totally cattle trucked !!
Must admit she sounds pretty good in this one !

Fuzz, the first one is a **** poor example of her ability. Far too commercial for her and yes, it was dire
Second one was good. ok She has problems but she has talent, no doubt about it

You could have picked it up for less than £6 recently, back up to full price this morning
I am no Amy Winehouse fan, in fact I have ignored my wife's copy of the album for months and months now....
But
Last night's performance was superb, pure talent

PS (IMHO)
Fionn Regan should have won (based on his lyrics)
Amy Winehouse should have won (based on vocal ability)
Klaxons rightly won (based on the best songs)

When I was at school and even university I marvelled at the way people went out of their way to be into bands that weren't popular. I remember everyone going mad about U2 performing Fire on TOTP yet 3 years later those same people would declare U2 to be garbage and to have 'sold out' whatever that means, same with Siouxsie, same with The Clash, Joy Division etc. etc. Frankly why does the fact that a band become liked by others and hence sells some records matter. They are still the same band. It's something I never understood and would get openly laughed at simply because I liked some music that was popular.. how terrible
Anyway the start of this thread reminded me of those times. For all Amy Winehouse's problems and popularity it doesn't change the fact she is a wonderful vocalist and I am hoping she overcomes her issues to reach her potential as I feel there is way more to come from her.
As for The Klaxons I do feel they deserved this award, but equally Amy would have deserved it had she won as would many of the other nominees. We should just be thankful that there are artists out there producing music that is original and quality as otherwise we would have to suffer wall to wall manufactured pop.

Well said that man
Reminds me of the line in the commitments, one of the band members talking to Jimmy Rabbit;
"You were the first to get the Frankie Goes To Hollywood album, and you were the first to realise it was shoit"
