Freaky, I'm just about to watch Brazil on Beeb 2, which is a take on 1984.

In this extraordinary vision of a futuristic bureaucratic hell from director Terry Gilliam, Jonathan Pryce stars as the Orwellian hero, a permanently harassed clerk at the all-seeing Department of Information Retrieval. Pryce is only kept sane by his vivid daydreams, which see him as a heroic flying warrior coming to the aid of a beautiful woman (Kim Greist). As unpredictable as Gilliam's Monty Python animations, this daring and dazzling take on 1984 creates a weird world inhabited by an assortment of crazy characters, including Robert De Niro as an SAS-style repairman. The movie's sledgehammer conclusion gave studio executives sleepless nights. Expect the same.

I've got it and have read it many times.

One of, if not THE, most important books I've ever read.

Then, if you like it, try Animal Farm, the better book by far IMO

Save yourself the effort of reading it, just look outside your house and you'll pretty much see what the book was about

1984 is a great book - It is also one of the bleakest and depressing books I have ever read. So make sure you aren't , you know, suicidal or anything before you start.

Totally agree with this, it's a great if very depressing read.

See how many parallels you can draw with Blairstrip one, sorry, modern Britain and you'll be surprised.

Really you think so? I do like Animal Farm, and whilst it was a good allegory dealing with a complex issue I thought it was a bit simplistic in the main.. although I guess that was the intention

BTW it's available free to read online..

If you want the correct sequence then read Animal Farm first followed by 1984.

These two books must be the NL bibles since you only have to compare what you read with what you see as DCI says and the whole secret agenda will be laid out in front of you.

Orwell was a very far seeing man, funny he shared the same surname as Billy Boy in real life.

As some have said-it is really depressing but take it as a warning!

The simplicity is what made it such a good read.

Re 1984, the film starring Peter Cushing is also well worth watching.

Now I read this!

I love Brazil. Its one of my favorite weird it films like Dune.

Never read 1984 but watched the film with John Hurt in it. Didn't think that much of it.

For those who find the issue of "Social Control" interesting and who may not have heard of him, look up Edward Bernays.
Especially his views and motivation for his work.
"Let the People decide".
I think not.

Once you've finished that, have a look at Robert de Niro's film "Wag the Dog".

Then tell us all about what you saw on the news last night and how much you believe it
