Default Cat Allegies!

I've just moved into a new house where the previous owner had 3 cats.
Now I'm allegic to cats so I had my girlfriend hover the house out 8 times (with the best hover on the market I hasten to add) and use pet hair removal spray stuff and still I am suffering bad cause of it!
I dont know what else to do.
Anybody got any Ideas?
I cant afford to go replacing all the carpets.

Its not so much the the cat hairs but the cat mites that will be in the carpets.

It will get better with time as the mites die.

Best thing to do is to get a cheap domestic steam cleaner and steam the carpets (this will kill them). Then hoover again. May have to repeat a couple of times.

I know what its like.

Had the same problem a while back - the only thing that helped was the steamer. Handy for loads of other things round the house and car too.

Steam cleaner or rent/buy a carpet washer

It is hard and slow work, but the results are great.

If you use the carpet washer; some tips:

Choices are: buy a Vax or Bissel powerwash, or rent a Karcher Puzzi or similar. I've tried all and them and each has their pros and cons, but all give the same results, make your back ache and all are very slow:

It works somthing like this: Use very hot water (not boiling) mixed with shampoo in the tank. Work sections at a time - about 2-3 square metres, wet carpet with spray only, scrub any nasty marks (optional) then use spray with vacuum in slow methodic strokes...slower the better (a 1metre stroke will take about 5-10 seconds to do it properly) , then turn off spray and go over area to vac up excess shampoo at the same slow speed to dry carpet. Then move onto next section and repeat. Takes about 45mins for each averaged sized room, and may have to refil the suds tank and drain teh waste tank two to three times a room (depedning on cleaner capacity).

Best shampoo that give value for money IMO is Rug Doctor, buy a 5litre bottle to do the whole house (can get it from the Johnsons dry cleaners - vax and bissel shampoo is a rip off in comparison).

Alternative, out with the yellow pages and pay a bloke to do all the above

It could also be the remains of the cat saliva from when they wash themselves (pleasant eh?!) A friend of mine couldn't work out why his allergy stayed even after moving house - it was because of the furniture that they had taken with them. It does fade eventually but that might not be quick enough for you. Steam cleaning in that case!
