Prison Officers on STRIKE!

knowing a prison guard if i were you i would be more concerned about what the govt allow prisoners to get away with. also being attacked in a pub by a previous "client" isn't most peoples cup of tea.

My folks have a couple of Prision Wardens as neighbours, and I am good friends with another.
Considering their conditions of service, the utter crap they have to put up with at work on a daily basis, constant scrutany by the press, lawyers, and clueless civil servants, and the joke of a below inflation pay-rise which was STAGED! I don't blame them for striking. (and you won't here me say that very often!)
I certainly wouldn't want to do their job. Partly because I'd end up kicking the crap out of some POS prisioner.. but thats besides the point

Well, they were given a 2.5% pay rise offer, which the union agreed. The government then informed them that it was going to be staged in 1.5% in April and 1% in Novermber. Of course, they didn't tell them this until after they had agreeed to the pay rise.
I.e. Shafted.
Now, I am not saying that it warrants strike action, but the union members obviously felt there was no alternative. Despite opnion, unions do not strike at the drop of a hat, they actually, you know, don't like doing it.

So they were offered a 2.5% pay rise and are getting a 2.5% pay rise all be it staggered? Hmmm shafted.
I am sick of seeing workers take on a job fully aware of the role description, pitfalls, risks and pay rate, only to go on strike when they dont get a nice payrise or their targets or functions changes a bit.
I am totally opposed to striking in any service and am dissapointed that unions are still afforded the power to facilitate such moves when folk should be glad that they're in a job they enjoy... If they're not in a job they enjoy then they should change vocation.
If pay and conditions become so unbearable, dont strike, **** off and get another job and let someone else fill your boots...
Come back Maggie, your country needs you.
Ooooo I hate striking me. Oooooo.

If I buy a car from you, agree a figure and when you are going to get it, but on signing over the vehicle to me, I then say "Actually I'll pay you half now and half in 6 months time" you'll be happy with that, will you?

Could somebody explain the difference between what Pissy Lewis did on occasions and what DCI is doing here?

It's EXTRA to, over and above, an increase... of 2.5%, albeit part deferred.
Going on strike over that is PATHETIC, they'll lose more money by 'striking' than they're complaining they didn't get

The agreement was to have the entire amount in April
The government reneged on the deal and went for 60% in April 40% in November
The union aren't aren't having any of it.
And good on them.
What you have said is that it's ok for the government to go back on an agreement but not the union - I don't see how this works.

I never said it was 'OK' for anyone to go back on an agreement, but the truth is the unions have what they wanted (albeit deferred) and managed to use this reason to ditch the 'No Strike' agreement.
