Angry MFI Messing Me About...

I'll try and summarise this best I can...

Bought a kitchen off MFI 4 weeks ago, to be fair got a cracking deal.

Was told lead time was 4 weeks, so full amount required (£7k) which was duly paid in full.

Kitchen was due this week so rang them on Friday morning just to check delivery times etc as I hadn't heard from them since odering...

...was told it is not due until October 25th now

My blood was boiling - kitchen fitter organised, MFI have had £7k in their bank account making interest on my money etc etc I wasn't happy with giving them the full amount in the first place as MFI haven't been doing so good as of late, but that was there terms and conditions.

So far all they have offered is appologies. No excuses as to why this has happened.

I really am considering cancelling my order, trouble is we're back to step 1. Lucklily my kitchen fitter is fairly flexible and can fit me in in October, but what if I'd booked a holiday to coinside with him coming, or he couldn't come back to fit it until next year ?

I feel better for having a rant, but how far can I push MFI, and what should they be doing / offering as a way of appology ?

I think the least I should expect would be my £7k back until 4 weeks before delivery date ?

Thanks for reading / advice

are you mad ?

paying 7k upfront , no doubt they wouldnt have wanted to lose your custom and would allow you not to pay it all at once , if not i would have threatened to walk.

as for any idea what to do , write to their head office and complain about they way you have been kept in the dark . tell them 7k is a lot of money and you might even go to the papers about your inconvenience

I didn't think paying the full amount 4 weeks before delivery was unreasonable

If your invoice says the original date, then you will be entitled to ask for compensation or a full refund. They'll try and say otherwise, check the conditions on the form you signed. If its on the invoice and not the quote, then its a term made after the sale. Which isn't regonised by law.

If you get a refund, they'll probably have a kitchen sitting there going cheap that will fit your property nicely.

Never by friom MFI they are crap, they once sold my mate a bed. He got the end sections of the bed straight away but couldnt provide him with the middle bits until 8 weeks later .
They couldnt see a problem here.

Also its well know throughout the building industry as:

It's very un-reasonable. With builders etc I'd normally pay 10% deposit. A nominal sum on start to cover materials if applicable, up to 90% of the full amount on completion then the balance 2 weeks later assuming there are no snags needing fixing. Never, ever pay in full before the work has been done or they will mess you about, they no longer care as they have your money. A decent builder / kitchen fitter wouldn't even ask.

I was about to spend a tidy fee ordering some bedroom furniture from MFI, but if their policy is full price up front, then I'll be walking out on them...

Exactly the same thing happened to me a few ago and we were left without a kitchen for about 3 weeks.

Really sorry to hear it's still happening - incompetent a-holes I'm afraid.

Try and get your money back, and then buy from 'Howdens'. They supply MFI kitchens to 'MFI', and if you buy from them, the carcasses come ready built, so less labour time for your kitchen fitter. They have 90% of units 'on the shelf'. Only thing is, Howdens is trade only, (even though I got them to sell to me), but maybe your kitchen fitter could go through them. Good luck.

Howdens are trade only, but go in, set up a cash account which requires limited information and tell them you are doing up property as a developer - they'll be fine. It is what I did, and it worked a treat - and I have no account with them other than cash (which still means you can pay by credit card - it just means they want the money there and then, not via invoice).... saves you a packet too

Yes MFI need money up front due to their finincial problems

look at their tradeing patterns etc

they are stuck in the middle with their suppliers etc

agree you should go to Howdens

get your money back and go someware else and that is your lesson learned
