Seen some lovely photos of people laking canoeing and its something I'll love to try.
Where in the West Midlands could I book an appointmant any give it a try without forking out on kit?
Is there anything else I need to know?

Spent all Saturday kayaking around the coast of South Devon - extremely pleasant and stopped on a random secluded beach for a spot of picnic lunch.
Love the freedom of them - you can go anywhere.
Plenty of places hire them out.

I've done a little lake canoeing, usually in something like an ocean kayak with 2 of us or a 20' canoe with 4 of us. It's surprising how much effort it takes from both the arms and the legs. It can be pretty tough going if the wind picks up as there is no shelter on a lake and contrary to all logic, yes lakes do have currents.
I've canoed in the sea once, off the Isle of Arran and I didn't feel very comfortable or stable when I couldn't see the bottom, big wuss that I am.

Lake canoeing/kayaking has to be the most boring thing you can do! it is indredebly tireing and you never seem to get anywhere, you are constantly fighting the current or the slightest ripple.
If you want to do it then do it properly in a moving river or the sea, once you get competent at it you will long for more and more quicker water until you are on white water rapids or surfing on the sea, the buzz you get from white water canoeing or kayaking is fantastic! and also rewarding when you look back at what you have done and stayed in the boat. If you get the chance to go kayak surfing in a decent kayak with decent waves you will be still buzzing and surfing when you get into bed that night.
When you get really good at it you can then compete in the Liffy decent, Mike Jones rally or the Dee tour! there you will really find out what you are made of
There are lots of little places you can go where you will not get killed as a beginner, Symmonds Yat near Monmouth in Wales is an ideal little learner spot, the rapids are not to big and there are plenty of eddys to hide in if you get scared. If you want to go kayak surfing then Kimmeridge bay in Dorset is also a good beginner spot.
Good luck in whatever you chose to do Ray but go do it

I did the rescue boat for a local regatta earlier this month - they raced those canoes and one capsized and sank - had to rescue all three canoers and the boat - first rescue in 7 years!

There are loads of places try looking for local clubs etc they'll always let newcomers have a go and generally for nothing, or a small fee if nothing else. Tis great in the summer when the sun shines and it's warm. Effing freezing in the winter tho. Must try to organise another trip off to warmer climates for some winter paddling.
Forget about the Dee Tour etc when you get really good. Nepal, New Zealand and Uganda are where its at... then you know what you are made of

That is a really good looking car, which for me is a great surprise as :-
1) I am not keen on blue
2) I am not keen on bugs
3) I am not keen on black wheels.
Just goes to show a car can be more than the sum of its parts

[quote=555-Shaggy;7219161]I think you'll find that's a canoe. I'm a kayaker and I paddle boats that look nothing like that.
My apologies! Relatively new to this and still get the names mixed up!

No worries dude. Wasn't being funny or anything, just annoys me that people call kayaks canoes. Never heard it the other way round so there is a first.
Must get some photos of my toys together.
