I took my missus to John Lewis so she could see which one she could manage to carry one up and down stairs.
She chose a Miele, and very excellent it is too. About £120 from Jonelle and 'best buy' in Which?..

I bought a VAX 6131 off ebay to replace a dyson and it sucks much better, plus it can clean carpets and handle liquids.
Vax 6131 Multifunction Hoover Carpet Cleaner System ! on eBay Other Vacuum Cleaners, Vacuum Cleaners, Cleaning, Laundry Vacuuming, Home Garden (item 250155992810 end time 25-Aug-07 12:32:23 BST)

Cylinder vacuums are crap for cleaning carpets though. Good for the lazy with weak arms though (women ).
I don't know why so many people have so many issues with Dysons, dropped ours down the stairs too many times than I care to count and it still perfectly fine Barring a broken belt and a woman removing the cylone thingy thats says "do not remove" and putting it back in the canister the wrong way round, which is understandable
Far better than the Electroluxs beforehand which burst bags, fell to pieces, and burnt out the motor. On that note avoid electroluxes like the plague
Oh and got a newish Philips cylinder at work where the impellar dropped on the motor causing it to catch on teh casing and start tearing itself apart - thankfully I stripped it down and saved it before it completely died - cleaner never noticed the nasty squeeling, grinding noise and burning smell Sacked her anyway.....after hoovering the place for 3months with no bag in the cleaner...it was chucking out more dust than it was sucking up
Anyhoo:
Henrys are ok. The attachments tend to break on Vaxs. And bags for Meiles are mucho expensivo.

shark man try picking up fine dust with a dyson, you spend more time changing the poxy filters than you do picking up the dust. i dont see the point with this bagless bollox, ok you dont need a bag but unless you empty the thing outside they tend to respread all your dust when you shake it empty. plus they clog up all the bloody time!

So your woman needs a new vacuum cleaner and you're asking a bunch of men for recommendations?
That's rather like me coming on here and asking which brand of tampon I should use.
Most of you probably had to Google the question to understand it in the first place....

We needed a new vacuum cleaner so the gf did the research and decided upon a Miele. I then gave her money. It's a bloomin' marvellous machine that seems to have done all the vacuuming by itself before I arrive home from w*rk.

Must admit I have not seen any vaccum cleaner that filters it properly; bagged or unbagged (leaks past the seal for the bag and gets stuck in the hepa filter anyway).
As for filters; Sponge filter is wash and go - I stick it in the washing machine on a low setting/quickwash; doesn't say to do that, but hell to it and its a 6month thing anyway....unless you remove the cylone thingy when emptying it (thats says do not remove) then put it back in out of alignment - so then cyclone catches squat and it all goes into the filter. Admittedly a stupid design as the only way to tell its lined up is by a very small line stamped in at the base on the canister
And always check wind direction when emptying
Still, I'd like to point out that it seems to be better at fine dust than the Hoover, Vax and Electrolux "bagless" cleaners which all claim to be cylone, but just dump everything into the filter anyway; this Dyson doesn't do that. and considering how many Vacuum cleaner we've been though its done "very" well indeed. And I want to hate it, as it looks ugly, its lurid green and grey and its always being used when I'm trying to relax infront of the TV
The only other Hoover that has lasted is an old "master" thats in the loft somewhere - evil thing, built like a tank, weighs the same as a tank, and to quote Clarkson "sucks like an asthmatic through a straw"
We've even killed a Henry! Well ok, the motor burnt out; not sure why, it was an ex works cleaner though, so fair to say it had some hard use.
Come to think of of it, why do I have so much Vacuum cleaner experience I'm a man FFS

Got this one recently and it laughs at the competition and had won all sorts of awards - cheap too: and lasts forever. Bagless are so last decade.
