Question Is the TomTom One XL with Euro maps any good?

Is there any reason NOT to buy the newer TomTom One XL with Euro maps?

Any potential problems I should be aware of?

Looking to buy a new TomTom and as we drive through Europe a fair bit I want it to have the Euro maps as well.

The One XL looks ideal for what I want but would like scoobynetters opinions.

One thing I couldn't find out, can I input European postcodes or will I need full addresses?

Cheers,

Bob

PS. Cheapest I've found is £205 at Curry's using a discount code, anywhere better/cheaper for it?
Need it by 6pm next Thursday.

Hello

I decided to buy the Garmin instead as it covered Eastern as well as Western Europe.

A mate had a Garmin and he said the sound quality, functionality and ease of use is better on the TomToms - he took his Garmin back and exchanged it for a TomTom.

So thats why I'm looking at the TomTom.

Don't need all the extra features of the higher model so the One will be fine for me (or so I hope!)

I think on TT for Europe only UK and Netherlands have postcode searches. At least on my Western Europe maps DVD it only has these post codes for these two countries that you can copy to the TT.

I have a TT One Europe (not XL) and have used it in France, Germany, Italy all performing superbly.

Mine didnt seem to support post codes in France though, so I relied on addresses.

I also have USA maps for mine and have used in NY, FL, CA.

Not having EU postcode option isn't a problem as I have full addresses of the places I go to.

As long as it does what it says it will I'll be happy.

Is it possible to set it so that it will go via the approx route you want?
Would I use a "via" option?

Re postcodes, my manual for TT Navigator 6 states..

Note: You can enter a postcode for any country. In the UK and the
Netherlands, postcodes are detailed enough to identify a house on their
own. In other countries you can enter a postcode to identify a town or area.
You will then have to enter a street and house number.
With regards to you other question, Yes, you can navigate via a particular route. It's best to use the Itinerary option for this as you can set multiple waypoints and save the Itinerary for later. Do you have AutoRoute on your PC? If so, you can even create the waypoints on that then convert to a TT Itinerary and copy to you TT. I've got the conversation tool somewhere and will try and find the download link. Much easier than trying to do it TT if you have a lot of waypoints.

Thanks, looks like the TT is spot on for me

I realise most EU postcodes are for a larger area, thats not a problem for me.

I just want assistance in driving the major routes soi I don't have to refer to maps or miss turnings as some places it gets confusing even though I've driven it many times before!

Cheers,

Bob

I dont know whether they have speedcam info for the Eu on those maps, but I gather that is strictly illegal over there-even to have the unit in the glove box and disconnected in fact and it means a very big fine and confiscation.

Les,

Are you sure you don't mean Speed Camera detectors, rather than SatNavs?

I've driven through many a speed camera in Germany before (Some are painted so you can't see them) not had a fine from them as yet.

Sat Nav systems are ok to use over there.

Yes I did essentially but was wondering if the Sat Nav unit informs you of speedcam locations as in UK. If it does that might be a bit of a risk, in France at least.

Well I picked up TT One XL Euro today for £205

Had a play with it and used it for a couple of journeys to addresses I didn't know too well and it was brill - took me a way I didn't know and it was better than the way I'd have used without it.

Have loaded more voices and updated things.

The real test will be the 3000+ miles I do in Europe starting next Friday!

good choice 4x4bob!

Print out the full address of the places you want to visit.

I recently did a tour of france and relied on the POI to find me hotels etc, worked well

You need a TMC enabled unit if you have sat nav - its what you get on the £2k factory fitted units, and it flags up congestion etc by receiving FM signals about accidents etc.

Must have saved me 2 hours last week alone as it prompted me to avoid my normal but blocked commute roads.

Garmin 510 D (D for 'deluxe' with TMC) is an example.
