Hubby has a home office in the smallest "bedroom" but I won't set foot in it - it's better than it used to be but is more like a computer graveyard - bits of old PCs everywhere! What DO you need 200 miles of old cabling for....?
I work from home but just use a laptop in my dining room, which is where I am right now, with a very nice view of the garden!
Keep all the filing/ paperwork upstairs in a bookcase. Easy!

Depends on whether you live alone, family etc.
I built an office at the bottom of the garden. That way I "go" to work and the family know that I shouldn't be disturbed.

I work from home and have converted the den in the apartment into my office. Was simply a case of getting a desk that would fit in the space and also fit all of the equipment on/under/around it.
All machines are connected via CAT5 cabling. I've got a couple of Airport base stations (Extreme is used to provide DHCP for some of my client computers, plus wireless access for Rose's laptop. Express is used in the living room to connect the xbox to the network and thus the internet)
Rose wirelessly uses her laptop from the dinner table.

Smallest bedroom is our "home office". I have my main PC and servers in there, the misses has her laptop, router, printers etc. I have CAT5 points in every room but also have wireless as well for working in the garden on nice days!

Have a dedicated office - size of a decent sized bedroom, downstairs away from the centre of the house. It has a fridge, TV and now an XBox (as my 360 is in the lounge now)
Most important - it has a lock on the door to keep the kids & wife out.
Working from home is pointless at the moment with the kids off school.

I have a works laptop which connects to the net via my ornage broadband wireless router. Seems to work fine, apart from my poor connection speed (1mb)
The only other thing I will say is that if you plan to work from home a lot it quickly becomes rather boring. No work-mates to sit & chat with about last nights telly or the footy. No two-hour lunch-breaks with your work mates to the local shops etc. Plus the Mrs starts getting into habit of just thinking you've nothing better to do than do the dishes, hoovering, ironing etc before she gets home from work! Cheeky cow.

I have one of these in my garden, Tv, DVD, PC with wireless, workbench etc, nearly done, just waiting for a suitable sofa and finalising the surround sound.
I could have used the loft but its full of crap again since I cleared it and it was thousands to put stairs in and I couldnt make any noise when the kids were in bed anyway.
I dont see it as an expensive shed, more a cheap room.

writing this from my bed atm, (wireless), but I've got a dedicated studio where I work/write/produce.
Expanding it in the next few weeks to incorporate a space for wifey's PC. Pretty easy, as I built it, and know how it was put together for the least amount of disruption and mess
Jacko - could you pm me a price for your shed/Summer house? Been looking all over for something like that
Cheers,
Dan

I have a small workshop for my business but its mainly just storage of tools & materials and an area for working. Only comms there is my mobile phone!
The office is at home, a spare room downstairs with alll my computer gear, filling cabinets, desks etc.
Wife and daughter have wireless laptops so don't have to bother me "at work" - I'm busy working now
bob

Its funny, the missus downsized my original plans as I was going to go quite a bit bigger, I am glad she did as it was a shock when we first put it up, bright white pine and the garden all churned up from me putting the armoured cable to it (80 ft ! of it, three feet down, took some digging), I am glad she put her foot down as it looked a sight. blot on the landscape but now its finished, stained and the grass has grown back it looks great and seems a lot bigger than I though it was going to, plenty enough for my needs.
Perfect place to scuttle to when you need some peace, its bee a lot of work, the base, the cabling (in and out), staining, painting, shelving, installing surround, pc's, fans, wireless antenae, locks, alarms, etc etc but its great, just need a couch now. I wonder what it will be like when the weather gets cold, only have a fan heater !
A lad at work has brought some pub optics in for me !
