Default Calling all SN medical experts, sports people, and DCI Gene Hunt

Right, I'm not as young as I once was, I'm not quite Teddy Sheringham's age, but Roy Keane is 2 days younger than me.

5 a side football has become less enjoyable due to incredibly sore ankles. I sleep on my front and the following morning they are so stiff I have to come down the stairs one at a time (if you get my drift). I've noticed recently that it takes 3-4 days for thsi to subside, when last year it was ok by the end of the next day. I also get some swelling round the outside of my left ankle ball.

Now I've never been the quickest round the pitch, and these days even less so, but i am two footed so both feet get roughly the same pounding over the course of a game.

So, do other people experience this, in which case I may have to knock it on the head or could you please diagnose my condition. Happy to accept that you are all experts so no need to see a quack

What boots/trainers are you playing in and what surface are you playing on? Makes a big difference. Indoor can be harsh on the ankles, outdoor can just hard too but the G10 (think thats its name) which is fake grass is good stuff to look for.

Have you tried supports?

Outdoor on sand covered artificial grass stuff. I've got a pair of Nike 90 astro turf trainers that are still in reasonable nick.

I used a support when I started playing after breaking my ankle and found it uncomfortable. May try them again.

Not a GP no, thank ****.

The problem with quitting sports for a year is you have to find an alternative way of exercising that puts less strain on your current injury. You do have to rest an injury but if you dont keep vital things like your ankles upto strength its really hard to get back to a good level of fitness.

I quit football about 17yrs of age (BIG mistake) didnt exercise and started playing again when I was about 23. It took me 2 whole seasons to get back to any sort of fitness, suffered with shin splits, calf strains etc. Now Im only in any real condition being 27. I should be in my peak but far from it.

I note you say that you "have to come down the stairs one at a time" ..... I would like to know how you traverse said stairs normally?

Leslie, that's what I think too, maybe it's God's way of teling me to watch Eastenders

DCI - To elaborate, I mean rather than negotiate stairs by left foot right foot left foot I mean, right foot stop right foot stop etc

Dave - Gave up 11 a side at 22, Saturday football encroached drinking time, Sunday football was just plain stupid Played 5 a side regularly (once a week) till now.

So you're saying you normally come down the stairs like a cockney barrow boy doing a dance from My Fair Lady

Get some Nurofen slow release 800mg tablets from the quack, take one (or two if you're naughty) and you'll glide like Darcey Bussell the next morning.

Happens to us all. My knees are going, I'll be lucky to see another few years of 5 aside.

So join the company private medical insurance scheme, wait 3 months then goto the doctors and ask to see a specialist
