That is a shameful piece of tabloid journalism. Anything to sell the papers regardless of the truth!
That fin is a basking shark, I see them regularly when I am out fishing on my little boat. They can grow up to 30 feet long and just cruise around filtering out plankton. They even swim within a couple of feet of the boat sometimes. Nothing dangerous about them at all, they could not even bite you anyway.

The thing is IF (not the big if) it is a great white it has probably been around there for years (first reported sighting was in 1999), so i assume the surfers and tourists won't stay away.
Or maybe they'll go away to the med instead, as there aren't any great whites there

<QUINT MODE ACTIVATED>
So, eleven hundred men went in the water; 316 men come out and the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945. Anyway, we delivered the bomb.

Well I went "surfing" yesterday (surf was pants) near the spot it was sighted and managed to come out with all limbs attached.
Naff story that seems to come out every year.

There was a report from about 1714 that claimed an unusually large mako taken in the Channel was found, when gutted, to contain a part torso of a man in armour - first example of canned food??

no, i've seen it. it's 200 feet long, it has 3 heads and legs so it can come up the beach after you and your family. there's also a man-eating liger down in brighton, a 60ft. alligator in the Norwich sewers and a 5 ton Kimodo dragon under Brighton Pier. check tomorrow's "newspapers" if you don't believe me!

Had a lot of basking sharks here last year - very weird creatures. Massive and really slow. They just sort of loll about!
Sunfish are quite good at doing "shark fin" impressions too -plenty of those about.
Off in the boat tonight for a spot of fishing. Bet we catch naff all as usual though!
