New York at Christmas... Suggestions
I am planning a trip to New York at Chrstmas to take the missus shopping.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where to stay, what to buy, where to see etc...
Was thinking about buying the usual Clothes, toys for my son, maybe some Apple stuff.
Has anyone been and did you find it cheap or expensive? for food/shopping etc...?

We did it in 2003/4, was good - very cold though. Takes 4 / 5 days to do the sights. We did a week in NYC for the sights, then flew down to Florida for a week for some sun, then back up for another week of shopping in NYC.
The AA do a good book that has a lot of info on NYC.

i wenr the year before last,in december. stayed at the ameritainia hotel, it is a room only place but it was good enough for me due to me being out most of the time. went to ground zero, that was an eye opener.(probably much dif now tho). went to all the usual places ie macys, bloomindales etc... roccafella centre. even got draged on a horse and carrage ride around central park.(which wasnt all that bad to be fair) i must tell you tho, IT WAS FREEZIN.
forgot to mention, the hotel was right on broardway next to times square

-14 when I last went, got stranded for an extra 2 days too, worst blizzard snow since the 1800's, only snowed for 3 hours as well, luckily we never bothered checking out of the hotel, and just phoned the airport to check on flights, all grounded for two days
It was fantastic, and got our picture on the front page on the NY Times too
streets 2 foot deep, Central Park 4 foot deep, people walking the streets with ski's on

Get a lonely planet guide, it is invaluable, I spent my honeymoon there and going next easter too, recommend doubletree metropolitan hotel, near to 5th avenue, mid town and right on the subway, use the subway everywhere it is great. Diner just around the corner, do not pay for breakfasts in hotels diners do lot better deals.

we stayed at the Intercontinental when we went, think its around £250-£300 a night and it was fantastic, great locational, wouldn't stay anywhere else!! we went for 5 days at the end of November and had a fantastic time, the weather was beautiful too!! I was ice skating around Central Park in a t-shirt!! weird weather for that time of the year but was great for us!! is a nice time to go around crimbo because its all christmassy(sp!?) loads of twinkly lights etc, very pretty!! Have fun!!

As above - it can be proper cold in NY. It's the wind that really gets you. So make sure you have a coat with a hood you can pull round your face. Else you go numb, then white then your nose will fall off
