Default Ferries from Dover?

Hello

I am going to have a wander through Europe and was told that it is cheaper to just turn up at Dover and get a 'cheap day return' (and not use the return) as opposed to booking in advance. And obviously do the same thing coming back.

Has anyone done this? Is it true?

Thanks!

Steve

Eurotunnel all the way, dirt cheap and half hour journey IIRC.

Boxst,

I looked at doing this. However I was told that they make you pay by Credit Card and have something in the T&Cs that allows them to charge you the full open return price if you don't come back within the day.

Cheers, Steve.

Hello

For completeness of the thread, there is a great code valid for a couple of months of RM0104 with P&O taking it down to £40 each way.

Thanks.

Norfolk Line can be good, especially if you are going to Germany. Ok crossing takes 30 mins longer but Dunkirk is easy to get out of and you are 30 miles further down the road already.

5t.

Not true, cash paid singles are fine. If you come back using the same company they might get a bit funny when you try to book - either use a different company, or book in a different name if you can.

In theory the ferry companies are reluctant to give you two day return fares, and you might find a problem when you come back. Especially as it would be unusual for a UK registered car to be doing a day return from France!

Norfolk Line do have an offer at the moment for £29 return, also worth checking Speed Ferries. I have never found Eurotunnel particularly cheap and anyway don't like it!

Dpending where you are going makes a difference. This year for my Le Mans trip I went out Newhaven-Dieppe, came back Le Havre to Newhaven. Had to get 2 single tickets and the ferry cost was £100. However cheapest sort sea route via Dover was £35 at the time, and I calculated I saved £80 in fuel, so the longer crossing saved money. Also saved driving hours!

Try Speed Ferries as they are pretty cheap normally. Can get down to £25 each way for a car with upto 5 peolpe in it. It's fast and goes into Boulogne from Dover.
