someone promoted infront of me but lied on cv?
someone in work has just got promoted in front of me, when the manager told me i didnt get promoted he said it was a very close call and told me that the main reasons the other person got the promotion was because he has a masters
now this made me think, this person was telling me that when he got his degree he told me he went on to do a masters but failed the maths and needed to resit it, but he told me he wasnt going to bother, and still hasnt.
so im guessing he has not been awarded his masters and put it on his CV. thing is how would i alert this to the managers.
i think if i went and blerted it out and the manager told me that it wasnt on his cv i would look an idiot.
but then on the other hand lieing on your is cv about a masters degree is gross-misconduct isn’t it ???
what would you do.

Be a grass, maybe get the job and him sacked.
Or stay silent. And have it eating away for a long time.
But.................. make 100% sure you're spot on with your evidence before making a **** of yourself/stewing for ages.
What we'd do makes no difference, as it's a pretty unique thing......... Your choice

My wife has recently taken a very specialist position in a large PLC. The job requires a very specailist qualification that is limited to around 100 people per year getting it and is highly sought after.
She applied, got the job but her previous employer and uni she got it from haven't had a request for this bit of paper.

If it was a deciding factor in him getting promoted ahead of you then you have every right to raise it with your HR department or management if you do not have one.
He has obtained promotion by deception/misrepresentation and that should be gross misconduct.
Tell them that you have good reason to believe that his qualification is misrepresented and that you would like them to check it's validity.
Just be very sure of your facts if you are going to complain and be very tactful in how you handle it.
Also ensure that you come over as factual and objective as opposed to emotional.
Good luck!

I would be careful - it is possible to get a Masters degree pretty easily if you have a first degree. Some Universities and Colleges simply require that you wait one to three years and then play for the certificate. You can also get a masters over the web.
So he may well not be lying!

Be Careful with this one.
Assuming the company you work for are aware that discrimination is a "bad" thing - I would have thought that they believe he does actually have a Masters - or as near as damn got it.
If you decide to squeal like a beatch and he DOES actually have a masters/near as damn it I only see down sides.
a) He'll be made your boss
b) You'll look like a weasly little ****
If he DOESN'T have a Masters
a) The company will probably have to re-interview - and you ain't gonna get the job. You cost the company 2 - 3 months of interviewing again. Your CV better be up to date cos you're going nowhere.
b) You had better hope that this guy never runs up against you in future cos he will be out to get you.
Alternative solution.
Congratulate him on the promotion.
If you work together on any projects - work hard. In fact, just work hard full stop. Forget about this situation - It is NOT a slight on your abilities, you DON'T have a masters - Yet.
I don't have a Masters.
I work hard in the Job I do and do pretty well out of it - Happy, solvent, drive a couple of nice cars, have a nice house in the UK and a Villa in the USA and money in the bank.
It's all down to Positive Mental Attitude.
Stop Crying into your weetabix and hold your head up and put your best foot forward.
If this guy doesn't shape up - He'll be out
If he DOES shape up - It can't harm for him to regard you as someone "Onside".

Ask him when he finished his masters as the last time he mentioned it to you he had failed it......If he goes red he knows you know, if he doesnt maybe he completed it. It wont change anything, but at least he will know you know

Jods advice is good advice.
But bear this in mind, If someone gets a new job or better position within a company by stating something on their CV which isn't true, say criminal convictions for arguments sake then that in itself is a criminal offence, albeit not used very often.
It used to be called "Obtaining a Pecuniary Advantage by Deception". Theft Act 1968
That is presuming his new role will give him the opportunity to earn more money?
However, the above act has susequentley been replaced by the "Fraud Act 2006" and would prob come under the new heading of Fraud by "False Representation".
All has to be as below though -
Fraud by false representation
(1) A person is in breach of this section if he-
(a) dishonestly makes a false representation, and
(b) intends, by making the representation-
(i) to make a gain for himself or another, or
(ii) to cause loss to another or to expose another to a risk of loss.
(2) A representation is false if-
(a) it is untrue or misleading, and
(b) the person making it knows that it is, or might be, untrue or misleading.
(3) "Representation" means any representation as to fact or law, including a representation as to the state of mind of-
(a) the person making the representation, or
(b) any other person.
(4) A representation may be express or implied.
(5) For the purposes of this section a representation may be regarded as made if it (or anything implying it) is submitted in any form to any system or device designed to receive, convey or respond to communications (with or without human intervention).
But as others have said you must be 100% sure of your facts as you could open up a big can of worms and end up losing out even more than you already have!!!

Just looking from a different angle, there may be other reasons why they chose him over you, but they let you down gently.
Also, if you do kick up a stink and the guy does have to stand down, do you think you'll walk into the promotion - considering the new atmospere you've just created?

there was a lad in my class at college when i did my HND, he barely turned up for lectures, was always out on the ****. All the work he handed in fot his 1st year was what he purchased off a m8 that had previously done the course.
2nd year he just didnt turn up.
The year later i went to uni to do the top up and make my HND into a degree. Me and my m8s got shock of our lies when he turned up at uni 3 weeks into the course. He hadnt completed the HND but told the uni he had. When he registered and was asked of proof of grades for his HND he said he hadnt recieved them yet, all they said was when you recieve them bring them in and show your course leader. Nothing was said about it again.
Again his Dissertation was a rip off from his mate who had previously done the same course. We had to be really carefull with him, say if we was in the libary doing work and went to get a book for example, he had been known to print off what ever work was on yur screen, or plug his diskdrive into the machine and make a copy of all your work.
He ended up graduating with the highest degree on our course and walked into a job less than a week later.

Tough one that.
Had a grip with someone at work last year. The guy was constantly turning up for work late (between 9am & 9:45) then bolting out of the door at 5pm, and not making up the time he was late. I also knew he was doing guvy jobs in work time, on work computers. I also knew that when he was doing overtime he was only doing guvy jobs while getting time & a half. I also knew that through most of the day he spent it looking at **** or chatting on MSN messenger.
Not wanting to be a Grass, the only alternative I had was to write an anonymous letter to the MD. Making sure I stated that many people had a grudge against what this guy was up to.
He doesn't work here anymore, and I'm not seen as a grass. We all do things we shouldn't in work time (me on here for a start) but this guy was just taking the p1ss.

I know people who have faked their brothers (twin) masters and degree certificates etc and walked into 6 fig salary jobs after they bummed around for years and their bro worked hard, also know people who have done similar after getting certificates etc from the far east. Goes on all the time, thing is it's the guys who do this that are often the BEST at the jobs and go the farthest. That's life i guess.
