Politicians visiting 'disaster' sites
Why do they do it? Surely the people trying to sort things out have better things to do than pander to a bloody politician? I'm no Tory supporter (or any political party really - lying scum!) but why the fuss about David Cameron not being in his constituency? Unless he was about to get into his wellies and lend a hand, why on earth does he need to be there?
As soon as anything bad happens they all leap into their cars/ helicopters/ boats and race to the scene - if I was flooded and Gordon Brown waded by, I'd tip a bucket of water over his smug head. He should have more important things to do.
It's not as if they even give a damn - a few pre written plattitudes for the papers/ TV and then they're off home again.

But they clearly don't care when they're there. They're just doing as they're being told by their press office. Interesting that Gordon Brown is off visiting today after the bad press David Cameron got yesterday....
Is anyone really taken in by this stuff?

I used to think it was only a ruse to try to show they cared. But in these floods I've changed my mind. After sitting for hours watching the news and seeing only a reporter and the one street where he was giving a report, (occasionally he'd say "let me pan the camera round"), I spotted a place I knew. But they only showed the one street. I was desperate for the reporter even to say "let me show you some other streets, and see if I could recognise any of the places I knew (without water).
I guess if I want to know more it's only natural for a politician to want to get out there himself.

Its all a con.
Self serving, camera opportunity grabbing, grinning Jackernapes.
At least over here our politicians used to visit the disaster sites BEFORE they happened. Cos it was them that caused them with Semtex

I would hope, but doubt, the reason they get out there is to actually see the situation for themselves and gain some first hand information and feedback from people at grassroots so that they can go back to Whitehall, take on board what they have learnt and take steps to ensure adequate precations are in place to prevent a re-occurence.
Certainly if something went wrong at a customer's when I was quality manager I'd be on site PDQ to find out what was going on.

And you've suggested in the past that it's me that lives in la la land!
If that was the case, how come bugger all changed after they all paraded out to see the last lot of flooding? Out they go, get their pic taken, promise the earth then head back to Westminster and start trotting out the same excuses for why nothing is happening.

It crossed his mind as this is what we should expect from politicians in the ideal world. He has expressed doubt that they would act like this. Don't really see why you're trying to bait him.

Just having a bit of fun - I realise that is usually frowned upon in NSR..... (Did the smiley not show up on your screen?) And anyway he's a big boy - I'm sure he doesn't need you to look out for him.
