Hamilton bins it
In qualifying. Into the tyre wall at high speed when the front off side wheel or tyre failed. Went in hard, looks like it could be quite bad for him. Fingers crossed he's not too badly hurt.

There was nothing he could have down about it.
Least he gave a thumbs up as he was stretchered off to the Ambulance.
Ron Dennis has said it was a wheel gun failure! The wheel wasn't properly attached. Same equipment was used on Alonso's.

Wheel gun failure meant the wheel wasnt secured properly which looks like this caused the tyre to blow
not good really, he may have injured his foot or his leg, no more news as of yet

And after visiting Lewis in the medical centre, Dennis told Louise Goodman: "He has no injuries, no broken bones.
They are just keeping him for a couple of hours’ observation, maybe here or maybe they will take him to hospital as a precaution.
At the moment he has no injuries."
Regarding the cause of the accident, Dennis said: "It was nothing to do with Lewis, we had a gun failure. The right-front wheel wasn’t tight, we know that now as we discovered it afterwards."
Dennis confirmed that Hamilton did not lose consciousness at any point but said he could not yet say whether the 22-year-old will be fit to take part in tomorrow's race.
"Far too early to say but at the moment he doesn’t appear to have any pain anywhere, no broken bones," he said.
"He’s completely conscious and did not lose consciousness, which is very important.
"We won’t be able to decide until after a couple of hours’ observation, but so far so good."
If Hamilton is cleared to race, he will start from 10th position.

140mph-ish crash, but it seems like he's ok (or at least no broken bones). Will start in P10 if they can rebuild the car rather than using the spare.
Glad he's ok (although during the press conference Raikonnen seemed more concermed about having to wait around during qualifying than the health of Hamilton !

Certainly looked a sore one on first viewing, hope he does race tomorrow but I think they might not chance it, incase he has another off and it might aggrivate any slight concusion he might have.

He will only start from 10th if they can rebuild his car which is in 'park ferme' (excuse the spelling).
If he uses the spare car he starts from the pitlane......

I'm also surprised Alonso managed 2nd on the grid despite that massive over-steery moment on his lap! When they showed it on TV Brundell was like 'oh now way that happened on his final lap - he would have lost way too much time" - but seems it was! Would have easily been pole otherwise.
McLaren's may well be light on fuel - expect them to pit before Ferrari.

And then it's just a matter of is he starting from 10th or the pit lane! It's going to be hard work to get on the podium starting 10th, but from the pit lane it's gonna be damage limitation.
Still should provide for an interesting race as he tries to make his way up the field.

Alonso may be light on fuel but even so I think he has a faster pace than the Ferraris(probably why he is now happy with the car?) and it will be interesting to see if he can challenge Kimi from the off.
Shame for Lewis too as he was very very quick in T1 also( -6tenths up from Massa)

how can the wheel gun fail? there should be systems in place to check the torque afterwards. sounds like somebody got sloppy.
one of my jobs at the nissan factory was gunning up the hub nuts, and believe me, there was no chance in hell of a car getting out with a loose hub nut

They don't exactly have time to check the torque settings of the nuts during a pit stop, it's quite a quick affair

the guns at nissan are checked at the start of every shift, one would assume that an F1 team, would be calibrating them a bit more often then the start of session ?
the pit crew do next to nothing inbetween pitstops, it would take seconds to check the guns calibration

During a 15 minute shootout I doubt there is much time for that, also with one gun only doing 4/6 wheel changes in the session I would have thought it could cope with that without being calibrated every time....

These F1 teams get it right more often than not....they know what they are doing. It doesn't matter how many checks you do, if something has moving parts then it can fail at any time.
